It's an energy boosting supplement, meant to be easy to use on the bike. I've tried some and it is easy to take, with good flavours and the usual ingrediants for keeping your energy level up during a long ride. Drink lots of water with it though.

Its like GU, if you've ever used it. It is in a gel form, making it easier to consume on the bike, because you don't have to worry about chewing it as much, like aerobar said. The only thing is that you have to drink a lot of water with it to wash it down.

I consider it cheating myself... I'd just eat a healthy lunch and get pizza stix from 7-11 when I'm on my way. Is it just sugar in a pill? Looks odd to me...

How did Carb-Boom get promoted to top spot? There is a specific forum for 'shameless promotions'?

I have no problem in principle with Joe and the guys raising money to host the forum - I don't think any of us would object to that at all.

But I hope the trend does not continue unabated. I'd hate to see the forum become just another ram-ads-down-your-throat like we see in the majority of websites these days. It could become like some magazines and tv programs, where they interrupt the adverts to bring you an annoying program to watch, but we'll be back to the ads in a few minutes, if you get my meaning?

I didn’t want to reply to this thread, as some may think my view is biased. To answer jump's original question, carb-Boom is an all natural flavored energy gel. I usually have one packet in my seat bag, and use it only if im bonking. Before my longer weekend rides, I’ll down one at breakfast with some fruit juice. If you ask me, its one of the better tasting energy gels out there, much easyer to eat then Gu or Powergel.

Bokkie, carb-Boom registered on the forums last year, I approached them to sponsor the forums. They send me 4 cases of the box, and i give away two cases a month in promotions / contests. I can do whatever i want with the other 2 case's. It was a hard decision to offer advertising on the site, but the site is no where close to profitable, and I needed to do something. This year, I’m looking to break even, maybe. The jersey project will put ~$450 back into the forums, donations over the last year will help cover the rest of the costs.

BTW, I'm working on a premium membership program, where donating members will have quite a few extra features, spell check, WYSIWYG editor, quick reply, larger attachment option, more profile options / personal page, better subscription management, ability to ignore certain forums, more styles etc. I don’t want to go into full details, as much of it depends on v3 of the vBulletin software coming out later this year. However, this should take care of any advertising issues in the future. The only thing to advertise, will be the premium membership options. We will just need to wait and see... :D

Joe, I endorse what you have in mind. I'd always thought and maybe I should have said as much, that you need the revenue to support and host the site. I don't think there is anyone who could honestly say you don't deserve all the support and revenue to keep the site going. In that respect, you have my support as well.

It was mentioned a while back that I could help do my part and make a contribution to the funds and I'd like to. The problem is, is that from the UK, the commission and transfer costs are quite expensive in their own right. If I could get funds to you with minimum costs, it'd mean I could consider donating more. In the US, the cost is probably quite cheap/negligible, but once other countries and foreign institutions get involved, the costs escalate as everyone want their slice of the pie.

Do you have any ideas about this?

Carb-Boom seems to be a specific US product, so there would be little point my looking at anything in that line, so to me at least, the ads are more intrusive and offer little advantage. I'm probably correct in saying the significant % of the registered forum members are US/Canada based? I've only seen a handful of UK guys and one or two in Oz/NZ.

The issue of advertising will probably grate with most people. I think maybe you need to publish a financial statement of the running costs and income so that people can really see what's involved. That could be hosted on the forum as part of the Logout/Calendar/Members/Ad.Search/... menu bar at the top. If more people can see what it costs, then maybe more people would see an incentive to contribute. Right now, the forum satisfies the way we like to use the internet, and that is as a 'free' environment without additional cost. You guys need financial support.

There is nothing wrong going cap-in-hand and letting people know what it costs. By the same token, most of us will agree that it is not right that you should incur any personal expense (I'm not sure if that has been a problem you've had to deal with). It is not right that one person, or a small group, should pay for a service that what, 3500 other members, are benefiting from?

The time may well come where you might have to host more ads to provide the essential income to host the site. I'd hate to see that happen, as most of us will.

Those are just my ramblings and thoughts - nothing to do with Carb-Boom specifically, so apologise for straying off thread.
