Mountain Biking - making mtb comfortable for road use

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. First post here and looking for advice.

My wife and I ride singletrack on the weekends and ride smooth, flat gravel river paths during the week for aerobic excercise. We stopped riding for 8 years and just got back into it a few weeks ago. Now on st, my saddle does not bother me (much and will get better over time) as I'm not fully in it as much, but riding the walking paths/around town my butt is KILLING me after 2 miles. I'd like to be comfortable for doing 10+ mile rides a few nights a week. Obviously, mtb's aren't the perfect set up for this but are there saddles/posts I can swap out for this type of riding during the week after work that will not killer my "tweener" :D ? Given the geometry of an mtb, is this possible? Is it that the original seat is just toast and a new mtb seat will make a world of difference even for road riding? I used to ride this on the road with no problems...maybe I'm just getting old? Any reccomendations?

Next year, we will probably buy new mtb's and convert our old (1994 models) to more of an upright hybrid/cruiser comfort bike for riding the river trails during the week. Until then, I'm looking for a quick, cheap fix between paths and st riding, no matter how weak it looks. Thanks for any advice.

a new seat would probobly be good, i ride my bike around on the street every once and a while to tune it and stuff and my seat doesnt bother me.

or you can go out and get one of those gel things that just go over the seat.

It makes sense that a new seat would be good...after all through time and wear seats and their materials have to break down. Does anyone know what the average lifespan of a seat is? Would a seat used 3 years be considered for retirement? I would think so, but before spending the jing, can someone confirm? Or am I just getting old and out of condition and need a big assed gel saddle? :) Please tell me it's not the latter :)

At what price point do seats start becoming "good, comfortable and functional"? I've read the reviews on seats and it's hard to decipher as many of the reviews seem to be by teenage wanna-be pro's, not real world experience.
