Bicycle Mechanics - pedal bearings & dustcaps

I just took apart the original non-driveside pedal on an old 70s Raleigh Gran Prix and re-packed the bearings. The pedal's missing its dustcap, though, so the grease, bearings and cone are all exposed. Does anyone know if these pedals have the same size/pitch threading as the MKS dustcaps on sale through Harris Cyclery, or if not, do you know of any caps that might fit? I guess I might just resort to duct tape or something...

Also, I have a couple of other vintage pedals with their dustcaps still on. Anyone tell me how to remove those?

Since no one seems to have any answers to my query, I'll just push this back up with a quick observation that after going out and riding on the newly-serviced pedal, I have to say the difference is amazing. I had the drivetrain built up only a little while ago, and my chain was relatively new, so I was wondering why the gritty feeling. That one pedal was causing it all.

have you try shops with big parts binds? I know i know the one in meat pack district has been gone since the late 80's. But that old bike shop on coney island ave look like it would have a bunch of stuff stashed away. I'm sure they are still there since I bought a bike from them last year. Funny thing is that i was about to order caps from Harris in hopes that they will fit these vintage Miche pedals that i am repacking. did the tape hold? or did the grease lift them right off?

Haven't put the tape on yet, but I was planning on maybe bending a small dustcap out of aluminum foil, then taping over that. But once I took the thing apart, it wasn't surprising at all as to why the bearings and pedals were spinning so grittily. Definitely need to find some kind of cover...

Where is that shop on Coney Island Ave? I don't really know S. Brooklyn that well--do you know what subway stop it's near, or the crossstreet?

without seeing or knowing the brand of pedals, possibilities are endlesss. with that said, i'll take a guess the pedals are lyotard, and the compatibility of the the threading with mks being "no." as for removing other dustcaps, some will take some sort of standard wrench, some have their own special tool, some can only be removed by pliers, some can't be removed at all in most practical sense.

After doing some further research, I'm pretty sure that the replacement dustcap I'm looking for is a Lyotard, but the ones that I'm trying to remove are Maillards. They're pretty scratched up, so maybe I'll just try the pliers. Thanks for the info, dafydd.
