I'd like to compile a couple(or three) CD's for my wife(her idea, not mine) to educate her on the origins and growth of heavy music. I figured I'd make the first one kind of an homage to British metal(Sabbath, Maiden, Priest, etc.) with some early American metal thrown in. I think the second disc will be more of a '90's to today collection. She's somewhat familiar with so-called "nu-metal", but knows very little about the greats, which is why she's asked for my help.
Now, I know exactly what bands I'd like to sample from, but I don't know which songs will make the cut. However, I'm sure that I'll forget something. What(and why) would you guys suggest? Keep in mind that it should be accessible to a novice(She's more into folk, oldies and showtunes:o). I have a pretty big collection, but am willing to go looking for standouts that are mentioned.
Please, if you can't discuss metal, let's at least stay on the topic of music, mmm'kay?;) Thank you for your support....
Well, Hendrix for starters... Star Spangled Banner, should be on the Woodstock Album.
Yardbirds & Grand Funk Railroad (No, not "We're an American Band), something off their Live Album, like Hey, Mr. Limousine Driver. Cool blend of funk & metal... Smokin'. PM me if you'd like to borrow it. Oooo, speaking of Smokin', there's always Humble Pie. :D
Okay, you can figure the chronological order by release date, as well as debate the relative merit of each to your history project:
Kick out the Jams, American Ruse - MC5
1969, T.V. Eye - The Stooges
In-a-gadda-da-vida - Iron Butterfly
Stone Free, Voodoo Child (Slight Return) - Jimi
Born to be Wild - Steppenwolf
Street Fightin' Man, Gimmie Shelter - Stones
Good times, Bad times, When the Levee Breaks, Ten Years Gone, The Rover - Zep
Smoke on the Water, Space Truckin' - Purple
Ace of Spades - Motorhead
Seek & Destroy, Master of Puppets - Metallica
Lark's Tongue in Aspic, Part 2 - King Crimson
Stonehenge - Spinal Tap

Good calls there, Stacey. I don't think those selections will be a problem, although it might take more than 2-3 discs for this project...I can see it now, "Karldar's disc-of-the-month club! Not available in any store! Join now!"
tim, much props on the Spinal Tap suggestion. There's one thing I was forgettin'. Another was Kick Out The Jams. Gotta love it!:D

Well, my initial thought was "Big Bottom", but seeing as how you're compiling this for your wife, I didn't want you sleeping on the couch.

Well, now I have to put it on there.
Kaldar, I was thinking some early Alice Cooper might do well on there too.

OH man, I should peek through my step brother's collection. He was a head banger when mullets were cool, and you got those jersey style shirts.
For an example of the showboat metal - Something from Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve... shoot might as well just say Anything from the G3 guys.
I would stay away from the King Diamond/Merciful Fate stuff.
Dio - Last in Line
Iron Maiden - Aces High
Blue Oyster Cult - (Don't Fear) The Reaper ***insert cowbells here****
Thin Lizzy - Whiskey in the Jar
Kiss - Strutter, or Hard Luck woman
The Clash - Rock the Casbah
Social Distortion - Story of my life, or Making Believe
Van Halen - Unchained
AC/DC - Back in Black
The Cult - She sales Sanctuary

From MY metal days (80s), I'd have to throw in some of the "glam metal".
A few standouts that come to mind:
Motley Crue - Shout At the Devil (better songs available too)
Ratt - Round n' Round
Quite Riot - Bang Your Head
Scorpions - Rock You Like A Hurricane (or The Zoo)
Van Halen - Hot For Teacher or Panama or Jump ( " I'll Wait " is my fave)
Cinderella - The More Things Change the more they stay the same
Slaughter - Up All Night
Rush - Tom Sawyer or Limelight
AC/DC - Back In Black or Shook Me All Night Long
Dio - Last In Line (another vote....probably my fave metal song from 80s)
A few other band thoughts (but ones I didn't like enough to remember their songs)
Poison
Winger
Dokken
Krokus
