If we knew what model Avids you have we could give an opinion. Assuming your talking about BB7's...hell no with the Shimanoe ;).

I have used these brakes (and have a used set which I am going to sell on ebay). They are OK-better than rim brakes and quite adequate for commuting/relaxed cycling. Easy maintenace and they are CHEAP. They are not as powerful as modern disc brakes and quite heavy though (over 1kg I think for the whole set).

I upgraded to XT hydraulics when I started to ride a bit more seriously with a club.

Thanks guys, I will shop around for the Avid's...seems to be the gold standard for mechanicals. Ride safe.

Is that an absolute statement? Are ALL Shimano disc brakes crappy?

Hmm, I swear Ive seen Wade Simmons, Richie Schley and Thomas Vanderham using Saint disc brakes. But your right, they suck, they must have been using them, only because they came on their RM bikes.

Anyways, my friend has those brakes on his bike and they seem fine with 8 inch rotors. They stop him and his 42 lbs bike fine.

its all relative - if you tested these brakes in 1970 they would be considered miraculous-

of course when you test them now they are found seriously deficient compared to the competition

but they work (still better than modern rim brakes) and I used them for years to commute on. I wouldnt recommend them for serious riding though when it is better to pay out some more and get something better.

You'd need 8 inch rotors with those turds.
Here's a great deal on the Avids: http://tinyurl.com/82wpj
