Is it possible to use an older road bike rear derailleur designed for a 7 speed cogset with a 9 speed cluster and new 9 speed shifter? It looks like the derailleur has the range to go from the smallest to largest cog. I figure that each click from a 9 speed shifter will just make the derailleur move less due to the narrow spacing of the 9 speed cluster.

Am I missing something here.

Thanks in advance.

It's an Exage 500EX.

Thanks for the quick reply.
