BMX - How often do you strip apart your bike and....

Last year I did a complete teardown of my bike cleaning and re greasing everything. My track is a bit dusty and I'm about to do it again. Just wondering how often you guys do a complete service of every bearing? And how many of you have sealed bottom brackets and or headsets?

I have never done that, but the only thing not sealed on my bike is my one headset cup because the other one cracked.. I dont do as much regular maintenance on my bike as I should. I really only do anything when things are broken or really bent etc.. I need to take better care of it.

Only when they feel like they need it. Bearings will tell you when they need maintenance, it's not something you need to guess at. =)

I constantly churn my bikes and parts. Any bike I own that's more than a year old probably has had every component replaced, some more than a few times.

what are you riding? I ride pretty hard and a bit sketchy and I dont have to replace stuff that often at all.

I don't have to replace stuff. I'm an importer, so I get new stuff all the time.

Pretty much never, unless I need to repair or replace something. Granted, I'll drip a little Tri-Flow into the brake line or on the chain, but that's about the extent of it.

I'm having a hard time believing you guys don't regrease you wheel bearing more often, unlees you have sealed. But I'd think that bottom bracket and wheels would need to be serviced at least once a year. Cleaning and regreasing must be cheaper then replacing.

Who the hell uses unsealed bearings anymore in their hubs and BBs? Aside from stuff on low-grade completes and Poverty parts, almost every crank and hub on the market uses sealed bearings.

Yes. But I suspect that more than a few people here don't have sealed bearings. My Cruiser does not, at least the BB anyway. But I don't ride for more than an a few hours a week. And not very far, just on my track. But the sealed BB is on my list of upgrades for next year.

BB = Bottom Bracket = where your cranks go into your frame.

all the bearings on my bike are sealed. i never take it apart completly, just fix what needs fixen when it needs it. lube the cables on occasion, clean the rims/pads on occasion.
i don't ride in mud really so it doesn't get too dirty.

yea, brake pads. they touch your rim when you squeeze the lever. they get dirty.

so I clean them with a rag and class cleaner/simple green/spit every so often..

1963? It would be much cooler if that that Stingray had a Corvette badge on the front, rather than Schwinn. You might miss it a bit more today too.

LOL Yep but i had a springer front end.

My beach cruiser has a springer, plus big springs on the seat. It's my other full suspension bike.
