Bought a couple of "Mercier's" one for the wife and one for me. Put them both together tonight and notice that if I push with my foot from the side of the bottom braket, her crank slips in, then if I push from the other side it slips the other way. As if there were no lateral stop on the bottom bracket axle.

I've downloaded the technical notes on the cranks and notice that for the 6603 (triple) there is a spacer to use. (Wondering if this was an error and the spacer is for the 20 spd version.) No spacer on either bike.

Do I just need to loosen the allen bolts on the left crank and slide it toward the bearing? Or do I need a special tool for the crank axle bolt to tighten that (Tool TL-FC16)?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Is this the external bearing model? Did you loosen the bolts on the arm and then tighten down the black endcap tightly? If it is a triple, there should be a 3mm beveled spacer on the non drive and a 6.5mm spacer on the drive side.

6603 is the new Ultegra triple. Sonds to me like the fine folks slapping the bike together installed the crank/bb setup improperly-check Seely's suggestions.

Yes it is the external bearing type. It is a 6600 (20 spd). I guess I have to find one of those wreches for the end cap. Anybody know who sells them?

BTW - I can see no spacers.

The spacers are on the spindle, one sits flush with the spider (6mm) and the other sits on the spindle btwn the crank arm and bearing on the non-drive side (3.5mm). If it is a 6600 and NOT a 6603, I don't believe you need spacers. The bike should have included the "wrench" for the endcap. Its just a round black plastic disc with a head that fits in the plastic endcap.

Unfortunately I guess I spent too little on these bikes as there is no included tool. I have ordered the toolset for working on the cranks from beyondbikes.com though so I should be able to sort it out shortly. Thanks.
