I have a durace seat post with a shim on Steelman with no problems. I got one from my LBS for free,

OK, a reason not to.
The shim can allow the post to turn, even when extremely tight.
I found a nice seatpost shock for $10 (I thought a steal until I found out it had been recalled), my local shop told me a shim would cost a couple of bucks, then when it came in it was $8 (!), I took it home and tried it out, and just couldn't believe they didn't mention it before I bought it. Then when I took it back, he had to get approval in the back and I could hear them yelling from the back, "Why the _ did he have us special order _ in the first place? I can't _ing belive this _!" Then even though I paid in cash they would only give credit. Nice and professional, eh? They're supposed to be the pros, but no matter, us newbies can stick together...

I use a 30.0-->27.2 shim, and it works fine for about 1 month, before I have to raise the seatpost
