Hi, I have a bent wheel on my Trek 800, (thanks to my son and the garage door :eek: ) I bought a new wheel, 26" mavic rim 36 hole that has a Suntour XC comp Freehub (can't return it bought at yardsale). I was not aware there was so much more to know about rear wheel replacement.
This wheel has a freehub with a threaded outer end. I need to now buy a cassette for this freehub. I bought a Bike repair book to help me with this confusion as well. I want to make sure what I buy will work with all the other components of the bike. I spent hours reading Sheldon Brown's page, the book was "general" reapir and maintenance, so I finally decided to post hoping some very nice person will guide me correctly. I really miss riding bikes with my boys, and I look forward to suggestions on exactly what I need to buy. :o
Specs on the Trek Shifter- SRAM Grip Shift MRX 200-70, Shimano® SIS rear derailleur.

Is this a casette or a freewheel hub? If its a cassette, they you may have one of those nifty old pain-in-the-a$$ suntour cassettes, where the lockring is actually a reverse-threaded cog. Do you know the difference between a cassette and a freewheel? Let us know more.

Sorry--on re-reading, you DO have one of these things. Sorry my friend, even if you do find one of these old casettes, the spacing between cogs is different that you shifters are designed for, and you are SOL UNLESS you find an old suntour cassette and get some old suntour shifters. But don't. Those cassettes are a pain to get off--you need 2 chainwhips and lots of cursing

If the original wheel simply has a bent rim, the thing to do is have it rebuilt with a new rim and possibly new spokes, the original hub should be OK.
If the original wheel is 26", 36 hole, you could probably use the rim from the yard sale wheel to rebuild the original wheel.
