Mountain Biking - What should I be looking for???

Ok I will be driving to a Bike shop that is a ways from my house I want a good AVERAGE bike, I am not looking for top-of-the-line.

What type of Frame?? Fork? Cranks?? Shifters?? Chainset? Rims? Headset?? Derailleurs?? Brakes? Hubs? Stem? And Pedals? Should I be looking for?

I am looking for a 26” mountain bike, with at least front suspension.

1 - comfort. You want something that fits you and is comfortable. I can't tell you which bike to get because you aren't me

2 - as for parts. Deore level parts are sufficient and for you level of riding rock shox will be fine.

In the 500$ price range you have many many options. Even Kona (an expensive bike company) produce 500$ range bikes. For pure comfort you will probably look at a relaxed position bike where the seat is lower than or equal to the handlebars. As for the rest I think that depends on what is it the area and what companies are prominant. :)

The bike shop should help you out alot, but I could eliminate all of that and offer you a (New) bike for a cheap price. I rode it once on sunday, and figured out that I am not a hardtail person. Its a specialized stumpjumper comp, fox fork, xtr rear derailleur (top of the line) lx front derailleur (middle of the line) specialized parts include cranks, seatpost, stem, tires, front hub, grips, and seat. LX shifters, Mavic 221 rims, and Avid Avid SD-5R V brakes. I will sell it for $850. This bike retails for around $1500, depending on where you buy it from, and I would consider it being just under top of the line, at an average lower end bike cost. And I live in michigan.

What brand bikes does the shop your going to sell? We could help you out with the models and stuff.

Thanks, while i was at the local store i did see one that wasnt to bad. Unfortunatally i did not write down the name, but I think it was a reighly or Trek. I did write down some of the specs for comparison shoping. It had a Shimano Acrea EZ shift shifter,Shimano Alivio Deraullers. The salesman said the Frame was a Steel Alloy, He also said the Hubs and crank were aloy.
He said the Headset was a Steel Aloy Threadless with the "Headloc System" . What is a threadless Headset and a Headloc System?

This bike was not an expensive model.

maybe he wants my road bike i found in a dumpster. i mean, it has a pedal and a half. too bad i want to make it a fixie!
