Mountain Biking - Is a trek 4100,4300 good first bike?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I went to the bike shop today and kinda liked the trek bikes they had. I will be riding gravel, dirt, and pavement. I will also be riding some offroad. Are either of the bikes what I am looking for? The price ranges were about what i am looking for. The bike shop guy said both of these bikes were great for beginners and can be upgraded. Any insight would be appreciated.

They are both good entry level bikes. Being that the 4300 is 8 speeds (counting cog rings) and lower gearing, and the 4100 is 7 speeds, I would go for the 4300. They do seem to be upgradeable, I would only do so as parts break.

A friend of mine has a Trek 4100 and it's a really nice bike. Has had no problems with it so far.
My motherinlaw and a sisterinlaw both have the 4300.They are a really good starter bike. They have had no problems at all.THe fork would be the first thing i would change down the road though. By the way which bike shop is it at.IS it the one by Faulkner Univ?If so i was in there a while back and those guys seemed real knowledgeable and were extremely nice.
