What's the story with float on pedals. I have LOOK pp-357 and it has 9 degress of float. Is it better with less or zero float? Is float good for you or bad for you?

personal preference.

I like unrestricted float.

I have Look PP247 and rode with the black cleats (0 float) for the first 6 months I had them.
Recently tried the red cleat (6 or 9 degrees of float-not sure) and have decided I like having some float. It allows my foot to move and change position so my knees and ankles aren't stressed. I think that's a problem I had with the black cleats because I would have occasional knee pain.

Float is typically good for the knees. My knee problems went away when I started riding Speedplays (28 degrees of float, or something like that). I have heard reports, however, that too much float can lead to ankle trouble, but I think that this was usually for folks who already had a pre-condition in the foot/ankle.

Cheers,
Jamie

Float is a personal thing. I have my Look PP396s set up for 6 degrees of float, and I like it. More than that, and I feel like I'm skating. Unrestricted float doesn't interest me at all. I rode behind one guy in a paceline once wo was using Speedplay X pedals. His heels were churning in circles with every pedal stroke. I kept thinking that "gee, that can't be very efficient." And it's not. If you get unlimited float pedals, you have to be very careful to train yourself to keep your feet straight while pedalling.
