My local store has a tool sale and I plan on cleaning and maintaning my bike on my own by learning/trial and error. For those who are mechanics or simply know how to tune/ maintain your own bikes, can you suggest me which tools are necessary so I can look into purchasing them.

any suggestions would help, whether its a link to a product or picture. Thanks in advance

Well, I think you'll find what tools you need on this site: www.parktool.com (click a certain type of repair and you'll see the tools listed).

The bike specific tools I have are:
A chain Splitter
A Crank remover
An IS Bottom Bracket tool
A Spoke Key
and a cassette lock-ring tool

That alows me to do almost all my own work.

Would you mind listing their price please? I just want to get an idea of how much it'd cost to be ready for my own repairs (I've got a chain splitter and a spoke key so you don't have to list the price for those).

Thanks!!

The average tool costs $5 to $20 each.

Get the best chain tool you can afford, some of the cheap small chain tools are very hard to use!

That list is about all you will need. All I would add is decent set of metric hex wrenches.

Drunken Chicken.. I actually came upon that website with further searches. It is very informational, but then it again its coming from a company that want's to sell their products so I don't want to believe that I would need "all" of the tools they are telling me to get. So that is why I'm asking for your guys help.

DMN. Is the chain splitter the small tool that allows you to take your chain apart?

The crank remover the took that looks like a wrench that takes apart the crank where the pedals are?

The spoke ring tool is that thing that looks like an eyedrop or ring?

Is the cassette lock ring tool that wrench with the chain at the end of it?

I don't know what the IS bottom bracket tool is.

MtbVA.. Thanks for the average price. I just hope I can save some money with this sale they have on supergo, performance bike and park tools equipment. Can you point out briefly what makes a good chain tool, perhaps one that you use? And I'll keep in mind about the metric Hex Wrenches of all sizes.

Thanks guys for you help. I really do appreciate it.
