I'm trying to learn a little more about sizing on these. What size (53 or 56) works better for those who are 5'9, with a 30 inch inseam?

are you trying to buy a bike without being on one first? bikes are going to fit different people differently - but a 53 will almost certainly be too small for you.

I'm 5'10" (5'11" when I stand up straight) with a 32" inseam and on my 56cm Steamroller, I almost feel too stretched out. I'm using a 90mm stem.
With that said, I tend to like my frames a little bit smaller.

Steamrollers tend to run a bit 'long' as compared to other bikes.

I'm about the same height as you and my 56 is a little big on me, but I chose that size on purpose to minimize toe-overlap. The standover height with 700x29's is no problem, but it doesn't fit in the way that track bikes are 'supposed' to fit.

53 would probably be the right size for you.

I am 5'9" or so and I have a 56cm (measured center-to-top) which fits me well. The top tubes are relatively long though as mentioned above.

Try CompetitiveCyclist.com for the fit to get you in the ballpark. It nailed my road frame (57 st 57,5 tt, competitive fit, their two other fits suggested even bigger frames). Nothing works like trying, though. My fixie is 53cm tt and I am very comfortable on both bikes.

My friend is like 5'10" and loves his 53cm.

Is that your "tailor's inseam" or is it the actual distance between your crotch and the ground?

i'm 5'10" with a 32" inseam (crotch to ground) and i ride a 56. i sometimes feel a little spread out with a 90mm stem also, but nothing a set of riser bars can't fix. i think you would be fine with a 53 also, depending on if your preference is for somewhat smaller frames.
