Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Messengersploitation

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Dunno if anyone's seen this. On the corner of Varick and Dominick Streets in Tribeca, there's an enormous billboard for Coors Light featuring a very happy, hip-looking, (white) bike messenger scraping the the ice from a giant coor's logo.
Don't think I've ever seen a messenger drink a coor's...

Read about it here. Picture attached. Yes, running two brakes....

... the f**k does it matter that he's white?
Ad people have been exploiting anything resembling counter-culture since ... what was it, the dawn of time?
Edit: I just checked out that Ad-Rants site ... they rip into the authenticity of the shot because the guy's got "fingerless gloves" and a "goofy helmet" on? Come on. The rest of it's obvious, he's too clean (and clean-cut), but whoever wrote that rant is just as ignorant as the person that came up with the ad.

totally unrealistic. i've never seen a messenger that big... i mean, he's gotta be like fifteen feet tall!
I just think people are jumping the gun talking about the messengers or track bikes becoming trendy. Look at other subcultures that have ben hijacked - first some independent movie gains popularity, then a crappy hollywood movie is made, then there's a toy in every kid's meal, then it's the new brand identity for 5 cable networks...
It ain't there yet - don't sweat it.

When Abercombre and Fitch starts selling FG & SS ..... they haven't .... have they?
Or how about NJS and Keirin "certified" Tee's at the GAP?
I'm waiting for the Ducati Edition Desmo-Pista
Cheers, its all in fun
:D
also, i mentioned that the model in the ad is white because, even though most messengers (in nyc at least) are black, the advertising community nevers seems interested in co-opting their identity...
When I lived in Colorado, I used to pi$$ in rocky, mountain streams. Taste the Rockys? Nah, taste my urine!

I remember a big, perhaps continuous, flap about that, seems the gold panners pee in the streams a lot ....... taste of the rockies indeed!

I like that no one has mentioned the flaw in this rant based around the fact that the messenger in question is running two brakes. We all do realize that not all messengers ride fixed...right?

There are quite a number of gold panners if you count the serious ones and the hobbyists too, you see, anywhere in the western half of the country, you can pretty much find gold. Not a lot, not absolutely everywhere, but it's there. Some people apparently find quite a bit. But most are hobbyists, and like golf or any hobby they can be numerous and hardcore about their hobby. And ..... well, it's kind of natural to pee in a stream right?
Gawd who drinks Coors anymore?

Wow, 24 posts in and no one mentioned the oldie cruiser SS chained to the scaffolding in the picture.
Come on folks, where are your priorities?
That bike messenger guy looks more like NASCAR rednek!

Uhmmm...I do believe Ritz mentioned it. I'm not THAT crazy.
I just wanna say that fingerless gloves are where it's at.
I know a crowd that's into coors. Personally I prefer that my beer actually taste like beer. But to each his own.

Word. That reminds me, I need to get a new pair.
it is not an old kozmo bag. it is shopped to look like it. again, trust me. please just trust me. my life is so much easier that way.

shopped off the Kozmo logo maybe, but it is one. I'll bet you a punch in the stomach. Or a valve cap - your choice.
my first thought was kozmo, but then i am not so wise and venerable as msngr. what's the deal with those kozmo bags anyway? are they truck tarp inside and out? i like the way they look.
no, i swear. i have it from the horse's mouth that most of the ad is drawn in, including the colors. really, she's a horse!
an honest horse, too. though not very attractive (she may be a gelding, winkie, winkie). i feelso dirty.
in any case, as a long-time messenger, i feel no ill will towards the creators of this ad. is it really that offensive? a lot more damage to my community has been done that something like this. i actually like the ad. so shoot me.
yeah, i actually didn't mean my post to come off as *****y. compared to the lincoln ad, this is nothing. unlike the lincoln navigator, coors doesn't try to kill me on a daily basis. i just thought people might find this interesting.

Fingerless gloves FTW.
Whenever a girl is in my apt. (very rarely) they always put on my fingerless gloves when they see them. Then usually a comment about them smelling bad.

I usually try to avoid beers produced by rabid right-wing racist union-busting dynasties, which rules out anything to do with the Coors family. On the other hand, I am totally insecure and trendy, and it matters a great deal to me what my friends and acquaintances think of my superficial consumer decisions.
That's why I drink Pabst Blue Ribbon.

coors is the beer of the oakland raiders, they support the commitment to excellence. that's enough for me to drink it. defend the shield, men.
