Classic & Vintage - Seeking owners of 1953 Hopper's (Elswick/Hopper)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I am restoring a 1953 Coronation Edition Hopper and would like to meet other Hopper owners to exchange knowledge (this BSA 3 speed is going to be the death of me). Also seeking Campy natural color hoods for SR brakes

Hello, I just purchased the same exact model. I am looking to restore it. I was curious to know how much progress you made. I have had a difficult time finding any information on this bike.
Did you fully restore it and are you happy how it turned out? It needs a new Sturmey Hub shifter and wheels. Plus a few other small parts to get it back in rideable condition. It's a womens bike.
If you have any tips please let me know. I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks!

I've got a little (21" I think?) Elswick Hopper Whirlwind frame with cracked fork that I'm not sure what to do with. It's a cute little thing, full 531.

RS,
(They call me PB), welcome to C&V. There are a few clergy types who hang out around here. Probably because it is such a nice place, but, also these good folks are not your congregation. ;) We Rev.s do need our space and the members don't always understand our harmless addiction to vintage bicyles. :(
Can you post us some pictures of your Hopper with specific questions that you need help with.? While not many will own your particular brand, or model, many can be helpful in more ways than you can imagine.
While not Campagnolo, here's one source for gum hoods at Loose Screws:

And these folks at Bicycle Classics have the real deal with the Campagnolo price to prove it:

We look forward to hearing from you.

You never know...in genealogy, it's fairly routine get a reply years later (I've seen it happen on more than one occasion, and if you put a family tree up on Ancestry.com you could expect replies decades from now).

145609145610145611145612145613 I have this Elswick 10 that has been converted to a single speed. It was born in 1934 according to the serial #.
I could certainly use the entire rod brake system including handle bars and an original shifter if anyone has them at a decent price. I have a 4 speed derailer hub but its not English. The rest of the original parts I have

Kent, that frame is really long in the top tube, isn't it!
There has to be something here about Hoppers:

Yes its heavy too. I read an article by one of the presidents of the company and he said they used only Reynolds tubing but I dont think he meant back in 1934.
What are rod shifters?
That is one of the coolest chain rings I've ever seen.

I was looking for rod brakes not a rod shifter rhm but some refer to those rod shifted front derailers as rod shifters. There was a little rod about 6 or 8 inches below the seat, mounted on the seat tube that operated the front derailer directly on some of the older bikes.
I have 2 Raleigh sports, one with cable brakes and one with rods. I will post them the next time Im at the shop for comparison.

Here are the 2 Raleigh sports that I promised. Sadly the cable Raleigh requires new cables, seat and other restorative items. You can clearly see the difference between cable and rod brakes.

I have an old Hopper in NEW ZEALAND, it came from Oamaru, New Zealand.
Gents frame, It has a curved spine and has HOPPER in the chainwheel.Rear forks bolt on I think.
It has a speedo on it and very broad guards, espc at the rear.
The forks have the double brace bolted onto them.So it looks like old autocycle forks.
It has been repainted with a 4 inch brush in red and white ( :
I have not stripped it back to ascertaim the colour or graphics underneath.

First off, is that a body on the couch behind the bike?

And second, are there any complete examples of these bikes?

Yes thats a really skinny body. We dont feed it much. Its a blanket and 2 throw pillows. There are complete examples of this bike but not in my collection. It was a very popular bike but Thats the only one I have. Check the on line bike museums. The rod brakes and clincher 4 speed rear wheels are available in India as well as many other parts for this model. I havent got around to ordering them yet.
