The quality of the cable doesn't have much to do with rub. It's the routing of the cable, and unfortunately, there isn't much you can do about it. If it really bothers you, you can use clear (I think Park might make some) glueless patches on your frame where the cable rubs, to prevent it from damaging the paint. There is also a clear chainstay protector on the market (maybe Lizard Skins?) that you could cut to size and use to protect the paint.

If you don't mind spending a lot of money go with nokon cables. But like the above said, routing is most likely your main problem.nokon.com (http://www.nokon.com)

I put some shrink wrap tubing on the cable housing where it contacts the frame. This seems to mitigate paint loss due to rubbing.

a little black duct tape at the point of rubbing( assuming your cablehousing is black) or a cool sticker on the frame at the point of rubbing also works for me

3M Electrical tape works well.
Either on the cable housing or on the frame. I use red tape on a red bike - blends right in!

Chainstay Cover: Cut a piece of ruber from old tube, wrap around chainstay, wrap with electrical tape.

My local hardware store carries clear vinyl (electrical) tape. Just visible along the head tube weld in this shot, it's pretty durable, invisible, and cheap.

Yeah, the cable setup is a little different from typical. (more pics here (http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=130055))
My shifter routes two cables from the right side of the handlebar. And I run my front brake moto-style, so it also is routed from the RH side.
