Mountain Biking - Anyone know of some mountain bike buying guides on the web?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hi all, new to the sport. Trying to find a couple of bikes for me and the new wife for mild off roading and riding around the city. Would like to find a buying guide to help me decide what I should get as a first bike. Steel, aluminum, suspension, etc. Could someone recommend a good bike in the $200 or less range?
Thanks for any response!

Try a few different forums too. I find getting other riders opinions is usually a good idea. This tends to be the most logical of forums for the average rider.
Either way find one that fits and buy it. Cheers
Nice site mtnbiker chick...probably the best for sizing I have seen. Even though I dont use a bike that 'fits' me :)

All good advice, but to be honest, you won't find what anyone with a fair amount of knowledge would consider a "Good" shop quality bike for under $250.00 Most decent bikes are right around the $300 price point. Sure, there are always closeout deals available, but you may want to consider upping your budget a little bit. You'll open up yourself to a bigger selection of bikes in the $275-$300 range.
