This might seem like a stupid question...but i've been wondering about it for some time. I asked my girlfriend about it and I recieved a smart ass comment along the lines of, "I bet noone's ever thought of that before". So on to my question: Whenever I make pasta, what if I was to save the water and put it in my watter bottle and drink it on long rides? The water becomes very starchy but does it contain that much carbs? I know this is silly question, but just thought i'd ask.
Wes
I dunno man, there can't be that much. I bet it tastes good with a squeeze of lemon though... NOT! :D

I doubt there is much in terms of carbs in that water. It will taste horrible though.
And as an Italian, I strongly disapprove. Ride hard, then come home and sit down to a nice dish of pasta!
That's nasty, man. Don't do it!

Well, in Kyoto (the best place for soba buckwheat noodles) the soba restaurants save the water they use to boil the noodles and they serve it to te customers after the meal. It was one of the best things I ever tasted. A light noodle taste with some texture and opacity with residual nutrients from the soba. Open your minds, people.
. Open your minds, people.
Open your brain, that stuff goes rancid in a matter of an hour.

Try it and let us know how it tastes. Personally I'd rather do fresh water and a peanut butter sandwich.
If you don't like the taste, you can wash it down with bong water. Yummy!

Dogs drink out of toilets too, I guess

You should definitely try this. If, as I suspect, it induces vomiting, you should still stick with it for at least a week.
Then you can boil up a pack of weiners and drink THAT left-over water with the high-protein oil slick on top.
Later, I'll explain how the human body makes its own gravy.
If pasta water had a lot of carbs in it, the texture would be thicker than it is. I bet that Gatorade has more carbs than pasta water. Here's how to measure how much carbs are in pasta water: simmer the water until it's all gone and the pot is dry. See how much stuff is left on the bottom of the pot. That's the carbs.
Keep thinking out of the box, though.
Even better...
You can grind up the pasta noodles to a very fine dust and then mix it in the water. Presto!
Pasta water.
Or...you could soak the noodles for about a half hour, then run them thru a juiceman juicer...MMMM...spaghetti juice!

The thought of making pasta smoothies has crossed my mind.

Why stop there?
While your riding, you can have a nice gourmet pasta meal. Get some mushrooms, garlic, basil, onions, tomatoes, spaghetti sauce and run it through the juicer.

This isn't "Dune," give it to a thirsty houseplant or something, but don't drink it.

I'm going to vomit now..... back in a minute
I've had pasta water before. When I used to do a lot of backpacking, on the trail you try not to discard anything, even if it's a byproduct of cooking. I would put a couple of heaping tablespoons of hot chocolate into a cup of the leftover pasta water, mix it up and drink it after dinner. It's a carb drink for sure and packs lots of energy for the hike in the morning! It's actually not that bad. :)

I see it as a fantastic supplement for weight loss if you drink it everyday. Especially for those on a budget. Vomitting 50 times a month would really help keep the weight off.

Really guys. You are killing me here. As one of the [few] forum Italians, please do not try this at home. Pasta is something to be taken seriously!!!! :p
Have a nice huge bowl of it at lunch, after a long ride, with your favorite sauce/condiments. Don't drink the water. :D
Sheeesh.

If your cooking your pasta right, the remaining water would be to salty to drink.
I think you should try bean water. I'm sure the left over water from cooking beans has much more nutritional value than pasta water.

LOL...
We'll I've used hot pasta water to brew a cup of green tea to save on fuel when touring out in the hinterlands!
A bit starchy, but certainly palatable! :D
People in Northern China used to eat the water that pork dumplings (jiao-tzu), approximately like ravioli, were boiled in... of course they were all poor at the time... I think they probably toss the water now, though...

No, that's chicken broth. Unless you make it wrong. Then it's pasta stock. :)

I don't need the extra carbs, so if the pasta water is not salted, I water my potted plants with it. They love it.
I still think it's just straight up nasty. Carb water goes bad quickly... like in a day. That slimy stuff can't do any good to you.

Yes! I think hot dog wrappers should read "Hot Dogs: In Their Own Water." Like tuna and yams, you know? :)
I think these have to be the same people who reuse their bath water or something.

For health reasons and my dignity, I've decided not to try it. I'll wait until someone else does.
