Anyone here old enough to remember Stu Thompson? Has my idol back when I was a young. Me, my Vans, OP shorts and my Redline BMX racer. Whipper snappers!

omg you're really ooooooooooooooooold
(haro 4 life)
Yeah, and Bob Haro was still a kid racing, not a brand. By the way, you had to have the Lightning Bolt shirt to go with the OP shorts. Feel free to search the BMX threads, and bump open the old school ones if you've got anything to add.
I remember Stu Hamm, Bass player. hehe I'm new roadie. Just went from my Cannondale MTN bike with raod tires to a Cannondale road bike. WHAT A DIFFERENCE. The rides faster. And I find that I feel compelled to NOT pace myself like I was. I've been riding my MTN bike for 10 years, so it's quite a difference in geometry and feel. Plus, going form a sweet energy robbing suspention fork to 120lb tires is a different feel too. But with fall here and winter coming, I'll likely not have my nice road bike out as much, and will be on the MTN bike in bad weather. But at least I try to pedal something everyday.

I remember when Stu Hamm wasn't Stu Hamm...he was just 'Joe Satriani's bass player'. ;)

Wow, thats a nice collection of axes. I have on old Gibson SG from my college days.
Anyways. I am trying rehab my old cro moly redline. I even have most of the old California Lite pads from the bike. Missing the stem pad though, and I need a chain. Bmxers don't seem to use pads anymore do they?
You need pads for racing, other than that, no.

The only thing that bike is worth fixing up for nowadays is nostalgic value. Typically for what it costs to bring old BMX bikes back to life you're almost looking at new bike prices. And an old bike is not going to be near as strong or as cheap to fix as a new one, so if you plan on abusing it, that's something to keep in mind.
Pad are for your safety. I'm not sure it matter what you're doing. But I'd think a neck pad wouldn't be an option for any sane guy.
Stu Hamm is amazing. I've seen Satch a few times, and everyone goes nuts for Stu's solo's.

Well, I guess that that makes most every rider out there totally insane.

Insane may be a bit harsh, but unwise would do. I just remember stories of guys that hit the neck when I was young. It wasn't pretty. They may be childless today.....
A bit of padding isn't going to protect them much on impact. Especially the padding on today's bikes. I've got 4 kids, so the doctor has already "Fixed" that problem for me.

Hehe, and ouch. I couldn't do it. You're a braver man than I.
Yeah, but now I don't have to be so careful about where I point it. At least, before I was married anyway.

Darin is that you, the guy with the mullet hitting the jump?
Yep. But I need to make the jump bigger. And a bit steeper. I was reading about jump building and they said to make the take off almost straight up. It sounds crazy to me, but I think that's what I need to do.
The first jump at our track is nose-bleed steep. Go have a look, it's in the "Aussie BMX photos" thread.
Is this the thread you were talking about?

Yeah, the first jump is actually a bit taller, and at least as steep. I thought I'd flip over backwards going up the first time. Nothing like what we had 20+ years ago.

that jump isn't that steep. you should go ride trails someday.

We're not talking about the one in the foreground - it's the one in the 2nd straight on the track, that launches you over the triples. It's very steep when you consider that guys hit 30km on that straight. And it feels a lot steeper on a cruiser. By the way, I do more trail riding than racing.

did you ever attempt to do a trick over your trails?

Yeah, not break any bones, and not land on a brown snake, which is an ultra-aggressive, poisonous snake. But I'm not going to get into a pissing contest with you, as I have a bit of respect for you.

Honestly, I have to agree. That really isn't all that steep. Steep is like 75-90 degrees, IMO.
90 degrees may be good for wall riding, but not jumping. Kinda says something when guys that race think it's steep, but guys that don't race don't think it's steep.

Thank you for checking it out. It was my first time layering lead tracks and I had alot of fun doing it. The country band I play in had our last show of the season yesterday. So I'm looking forward to geting back itno my own music for the winter.

Are saying the jump with teh red circale on it isn't that steep? It looks VERY steep to me. I'd like to see what you call steep. Post pics. I'd be worrind about getting a bunc of height then casing the landing. The scary thing about tracks is all the doubles. There is really no way to practice them, it's do or die, or go home. I prefer table tops.

Are you serious? The doubles that they have at tracks aren't even really doubles, they're just tabletops with a bit of extra dirt on the ends.
This one (the rider is my friend Tyler) isn't even all that big of a jump, nor is it all that steep, but it sure hell appears to be steeper, taller, and longer than that "double" out at the race track.

That's a sick looking jump. I'd be afraid of coming up short, or going too long. How do you practice a jump like that. It's either make it or or die.

i pour a little bit of water on the lip of the landing so if i case the dirt is loose and i don't flip forward. i barely ever ride trails, but i have done some crazy things on ghetto ass trails
Ok, that's steeper. But on the track, they make them as steep as they can while still letting you maintain forward momentum.

Are you trying to insinuate that he's going backwards? Trust me, when he comes back down and lands on the backside of that double, he doesn't exactly come to a screeching halt.

The jump in your photo is for big air and tricks. The jumps on the track are an obstacle between the rider and the end of the track. Your jump has one option - clear it or else. The track's jumps are designed to be rolled over, or you can use them to launch over the whole thing. Apples and oranges.
no, the obsticles at tracks are designed for pro riders as well as six year old novices.

trust me, you can hit that jump in the photo with loads of forward momentum and no height at all
