Rides and Races - DC Pirates' Pillages and Plunders

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

ooh! now thats alot of talk coming from a guy we hardly ever see..
you know, its been a long time since your last ride
the pirates have been getting faster!
LBK will give you a run for your money - and thats a fact
but ladies and gents,,
I would like to tip my hat to Mr. Fusion
As one of the first (and friendliest) pirates,
I'm honored to hear him actually speak up for once and talk some smack like it ought to be talked.
way to go brother.
any chance you'll grace us with your presence this evening?

huh? why single me out? i haven't even played polo yet. but i can't wait to fall over a lot. I 'll give anyone a run for their money when it comes to falling over. it gets the job done.

I unfortunately have to work. Since the early years of the pirates, I have taken a second [sigh] night job and thus I can't always join in your reindeer games.
I've noticed that something is going on this Sunday. I might be able to make that.
My recently overhauled drivetrain is smoooooth and I need any excuse to enjoy it.

Get me from Rockville to DC without the Metro with a bike, and I'm there. I could leave work as early as, say, 4:30.

Folding bicycles and non-collapsible bicycles of all types that are folded or disassembled, respectively, and enclosed in carrying bags, cases or boxes are deemed "luggage" items and are permitted inside railcar at all times. The carrying bags or cases shall be made of sturdy material such as canvas, nylon or leather-type materials.
Source: http://careers.wmata.com/metrorail/bikes_guidelines.cfm
To me that reads like:
Take the front wheel of to have it "disassembled", put it in a (possibly home-made) canvas/nylon bag with shoulder strap and carry it along on Metro rides as luggage AT ALL TIMES. :D
(Or maybe get a folding bike with carrying bag)
chimblysweep
11-02-05, 11:19 AM
oooOOOooo. you can get nylon carrying bags fairly cheap.

I got lost up there once, took 355 south all the way back to DC. The road's 50 speed limit, I was on the sidewalk most of the time ...

Fear naught, there will be bikes for all.
Is the SR up in Rockabilliville still?
Can outfit Laura and Eric too, if they are game.

my knee swelled up with a goose-egg sunday, but it's better now. just some vile bruises. i wish i had started out practicing in my socks. i didn't fall over any after that! i recommend the sock technique. might be hard on the feet with eggbeaters tho.

Interesting. So I take a front wheel off and toss it into a bag and I'm golden? That would rule pretty ****ing hard.
I will have to look into that. Perhaps we can discuss it tonight.
And thanks for the offer, pnc. I'm not sure what Erik and Laura think about Critmass or what they feel about it.
I'm pretty sure Erik's still a ways away from getting on a bike. But we'll see tonight, maybe.

I can't guarantee, that taking of just the front wheel counts as disassembling, but I think it would be worth trying. Worst case they won't let you take Metro or you have to take off the rear wheel, too.
Have fun tonight!

11-02-05, 03:39 PM
dude. the metro employees don't care. just take the wheel off, throw it in a bag, and print up the policy and carry it with you.
You pirates are pretty rad. Thanks for taking me in. Tink, thanks for the drink. Jameson=tasty.

I want to make sure Tink gets the props he deserves as designer/puppetmaster behind the whole tee operation. Yeeeeeey! I mean yaaarrrr! Without such an awesome design and positive attitude (in a pirate kind of way), I would not have wanted to deal with all the inking tribulations, and tee size B.S. etc. Thank ye Tink! Credit where credit's due. I'm happy to be able help make the dream of street pirate world domination a reality. >>tear<<<

Does Timbuk3 make a big enough bag for a pista? It would be too poetic to have a chrome bag with a pista enclosed.

can the packing box have wheels on it, like airport luggage?

Yup. The major thing is that your nasty, dirty, greasy bicycle is fully enclosed so it doesn't soil some honest citizen's suit.
Of course, you're still liable to get sticky from all the food and drink people are consuming on the trains these days. And if there's an emergency, you ain't getting to the exit doors, cause there'll be a dozen Hummer-sized strollers blocking your way.
