From Poopncow's: East on Rhode Island Avenue short several blocks then left on Lincoln RD pass through the dark crypt of Glenwood Cemetary ooooh, then right at Bryant Street 2336 is the first rowhouse on the right -a corner rowhouse at 2nd and Bryant NE

I ride rain or shine Friday, 6pm Dupont Circle -Critical Mass.

The Squash Grill can happen rain or shine too, thanks to the covered porch -one of human's finest inventions.

Anybody good with derailer adjustments? I put together a road bike for a friend and I just don't know what I'm doing when it comes to making the rear derailer work.

I didn't do a good job, but I did it once. I think I put the shifter all the way to one gear, probably the least-tension-on-cable-gear. After placing the derailer in the spot the cable was set at, I tightened things up. I never had my hardest gear since. I think a little more machine/tinkering would make it better.
Now, come to my house Friday!

Who's having any Halloween fantasies? Some friends are in the mood for Wizard of Oz characters. I forget why I said I'd be the Scarecrow. But imagine a flock of Flying Monkees on Bikes, bat wings and all! Led by a Wicked Witch of course!

agreed with what was said before, but a little more in-depth:

have the chain on the smallest ring in back, largest ring in front. adjust the small screw located on the derailleur itself until your chainline [including chain on/underneath derailleur] is absolutely straight. however you need to be careful to ALSO adjust it with the chain on the smaller front ring and larger back rings, since presumably you want to be able to ride it on all gears smoothly. you just kinda gotta eyeball it.

hope this makes sense.

also: if you're using friction shifters, forget all of the above... you fine-tune that sh-t on the go.

The derailer cable is all slack to begin with... do I just pull the slack through until it's decently taut?

yes, preferably with a wrench or vise grips or something similar. the "at rest" position on a derailleur [i.e. with no cable tension] should be on the smallest ring. however, no matter how hard you pull the cable when tightening it, you'll always have a little slack. hence the adjustment screw.

it's much easier to do this with friction shifters, btw... is that what you have?

edit: i didn't mean wrench, i meant pliers. suffice it to say you have to pull tight.

Put the shifter into the highest gear (= smallest cog on the cassette/freewheel) screw in the tension adjuster screws at the shifter and the derailleur. Push the derailleur inward so it lines up with the smallest cog, pull the shifter cable until tensioned and then tighten the bolt that holds the cable at the derailleur. THEN you set the limit screws. THEN you do the fine adjustment with the tension adjuster screws.

THEN THATS what I didn't do. And now, I'm enlightened. You know, I don't, you share, Kalani Knows, we know, we share, THEN we're all going forward.
Sounds like a good time to eat Squash this Friday night at the 2336 2nd street NE Squash Grill.

the rules would be points for best costume, points for best time, and points off for amount of time late. there will hopefully be more challenges than you can finish, and points would vary per challenge.

My phone just died ... again. Trip to CPk is a good idea, we can also hit proteus and IKEA!!!! wahoo! Actaully, I would not mind driving, and have racks, plus ideas for trades with larry (i.e. Redcay and Lemond....if I were only 10% taller.....)

Did it go on or was it rained out?

12th & D SE? Not Sherwood anymore or was this a one time change? What is at 12th & D SE?

spud

Rush Rink is at 12th & D SE

Sherwood is no good for polo, finally everybody realized this and we've moved/moving to a new location.
