I was just thinking. I have an old '82 road bike that I was fixing up. If one of us pirates' need a bike to build in to a fixed for Chicago this would work out. PM me if you want to talk about it.

ok, so more ideas...
i was just alerted that the sierra club will be offering free beer at the Marx Cafe on Oct 26. I know this is a ways away, but it's worth planning that far ahead for free beer.

Would pirates be up for a pirate do-gooder night?

I'd love to ride up and down the bike/bus lanes of 11 and 9th streets, staking our claim to our lanes, for an hour and the n ride up to mt pleasant for our free beer reward. (those are the lanes that say "bus bike only" but everyone drives cars in. we could ride slow, cm style, and do some hopefully non confrontational ed\ucation that way?)

it's just an idea. whaddya think?

somethings been bugging me

this evening i rode home
but i didn't stop
i kept going
on roads i never road
on new paths to new lands

i saw children, wild animals, beautiful houses, savy potholes and uncharted territory
endless streets that have no masters
no rule, no law,
but mine

we are pirates no?
are we not to pillage, to plunder, to pioneer and thereby proffit?
if so, how can we do this without setting sail for new waters?
and by mapping new charts,
do we not become masters of our domain?

i propose a new law..

let us not set foot in the same tavern twice
and for each ride henceforth
let us expand our territory
and grown in strength, numbers, and wealth

we, the brothers and sisters of the bones
should let loose of our compasses, our manifests and our worries
and when we ride, we should ride like a pack of sharks
hungry for the next unsuspecting oasis
hunting our elusive prey

you will here more of my mutiny
and our voices will grow
for these streets our ours for the taking
and the time for taking is now

I'm not all that fond of Karl Marx. And if it's like other so-called "free" stuff you get in communist countries, quality and -- more importantly -- quantity will be limited. On top of that, there will only be one type of beer. Who's up for the actual experience of waiting in a bread line?

Fortunately, this isn't going to supplant next week's Pilsner ride. Amen.

aye, so can someone (chimbly?) make a list of all the bars we've plundered in the past? i'll start working on a map.

this pirate believes pirates have no laws...
and that some bars work well for pirates, what with their large enough spaces and well priced grog.

some bars we should not return to because they suck.
some bars are great for us and to us. and it's always good to return to friendly, familiar waters.

re: Laws, they are made to be spoken not herd

re: T-shirt, crimson on black gets my vote, and the vote is in medium (please don't look like a bunch of WAKA kick ballers....)

re: Ghetto Bikes, have cranks (94, 130 and 144) and BB's to match, 700 front 700 rear w free wheel. 3 frames for over 5' 10" (2 are complete bikes but need complete overhaul) brakes brakes brakes, dropbars, straight bars alum, carbon....levers levers levers ... stuff stuff . If we need to build on the cheap, this is an option.

Have a Uhaul and trailor to unload now, I need to ride.

return to friendly, familiar waters.

i fear the familiarity of these waters
the excitement and danger of uncharted territory calls out to me

no map is needed
i don't want to be too literal about this.
its just an idea,

i love the idea of us rolling into some crazy little hole in the wall bar we've never been to. ordering a round. making merry and boisterously pouring ourselves back into the streets and onwards to the next (as yet undiscovered) bar.

I love the idea of adopting an almost "critical mass"-esque type approach to our course. meaning that whoever's in front of the group will decide where we go. then the next person will randomly adopt the role of leader. Talk about communist!

I love the idea of undiscovered streets. Quiet back roads that have never seen anything like us when we roll by and pillage their train of thought.

yArrrr

..

i just want to keep this fresh.
to keep it interesting
to pirate

I didn't, so I read about it in The Washington Post:

"The name is a play on words," says Hawthorne; it combines the name of her husband, contractor Mark Peters, with that of the founder of modern socialism, Karl Marx.

The Marx Bros. Cafe (http://www.marxcafe.com) is in Anchorage Alaska. :p

Shirts update--I can't do red on black because I"m not Kinkos, people. Beyond my capabilities. Dark ink (red/crimson) does not show up on dark shirt (black) unless you use special coated and heat-set ink found at commercial printers. BUT, if you would like a lovingly hand-screened DIY lookin shirt in black and white, reminiscent of the OG jolly roger, then I"m happy to provide. Still takin size orders and will probably place order on tuesday. Let me know by then.

Regarding that other thing: Rules make me grumpy. Can you tell?

I wouldn't mind one of those shirts in XL since you said they are sized kinda small.

And sorry about that close call turning onto 18th at the end of the last ride. I was having problems popping out of that stupid pedal all night. I really need to replace those pedals.

It is actually a stylized and serrated bash guard for curb hopping

adding a brake will disturb the aesthetic qualities of this convert,

and since the crank and cog is on the left, skipping and skitting will only tighten the cog ... which is actually anti-suicide

Dear eisenhardt,

The time is almost near. Please be aware that the start time for the
ride is 7am to 9am, and route services will end at 6pm - riders should
be off the roads by sunset.

For those riding the 100-mile route, a small detour has come about due
to road construction. This detour has been marked extensively, and takes
place at the 55-mile marker. Please be advised.

Please use the link below for a map of event parking.

Many thanks and we look forward to another fun ride!

and... for the record... the first pirates ride ever was to the old dominion beer festival this spring. the riders were jrowedc, dc_emily, the *new*guy, Alex (not from the board), and myself. And maybe a few others... I forget... for obvious reasons.

Hey everyone, new to the group, and pretty much new to this forum. Some friends and I have been doing a ride very similar to yours, every Tuesday since Feb. this year (occaisionally it had to move to Thursday, but we still rode our bikes and got drunk) called TNS - Tuesday Night Swill. Occaisionally we throw down an all day Saturday ride and hit all the good bars in one day...one glorious long day called WUSS.

Anyway, just introducing myself and looking to join up with you all on Tuesday. Probably try and leave Falls Church around 6pm for anyone who is interested in riding in to the meeting spot.
