any chance you can tap a bunch of 15mm nuts so that they have 10-32 threading on the inside? cause, like you said, 10-32 nuts are tiny -- certainly too wimpy looking for a bike. the alternative is to get a pair of allen-bolted nuts from qbp for $2 each (part # qr5500 -- on page 483 in the new catalog).

also: mcmaster-carr is IN-***ing-credible. wow. they have so much ****ing ****!

actually, mcmaster doesn't have it, or anything close. the longest 10-32 thing they have is a 6" bolt, but it's got a tiny flat-head screw head, so you'd need to augment it with big old washers. better to go to home depot, get the 12" 10-32 rods for like 89 cents each, cut them in half, and toss two hex nuts on there...

mcmaster has, um, pretty much everything else you could want, though, that's for sure. and they probably ship stuff in a sac...

a little help, since i don't have that beast in front of me: what's there?

the whole catalog is online, not sure about the easiest way of going to a specific page of it though.

oh yeah, that was a brain fart over here...i thought you were referring to the QBP catalog. i can't believe how much of a ****ing pain in the *** it must have been for mcmaster to put all of their itty bitty products, in all shapes, sizes, coatings, quantities, colors, gauges, etc online...it's incredible, really.

i think the way to go iszinc-plated steel. (if only they had just plain stainless, but whatever)
part # 95475A525 = bag of 25 6" 10-32 rods, perfecto for front skewers (exactly the same, actually, as front skewers). $13, and I'll gladly share. hopefully poopncow can create some 15mm (or similar) hex nuts...or else we go with QBP.

you are almost always better off going with something you can buy off the shelf. I really don't feel like looking for a chunk of metal that I can fashion into a nut, and then have to drill it and tap it (and run the risk of snapping a $12 tap in it) when you can buy the **n**a**6 for $2. For me, at this point it is an excercise in fun stuff you can make for cheap...which is always cool . If only we can also create a fastener head that no one else can remove, then I will be really interested in MAKING those nutz.
Remember, you are torquing on that thin little 10-32, so you can easily pull it into 2 parts. I watched one of my guys use an 18 inch wrench to snap a bunch of 1" threaded rods while setting a 32 inch journal bushing (he was angry and wanted to prove a point). so best to use a good grade steel.

Meanwhile, my mine wonders off and starts thinking about fasteners for plastic part in auto interiors that may have 10-32 threading and oversized flanges. Or that knob on my night stand or cabinettes that also have 10-32 threads....lalala

OK I just got my new wheels in yesterday (WooHoo!). I usually go to the bike shop to get any adjustments, parts mounted, or repairs for fear that I'll f**k something up (leave it in the knowing hands of professionals). Well I've been feeling pretty lazy having them do everything for me, so I thought

"Hey, putting a tire 'n' tube on should be a pretty easy intro. into doing things myself from now on, right?"

WRONG!

First it was alot harder than I thought getting that goddamned tire the whole way around the rim and don't get me started on that last little three or four inches of tube that refused to clear the rim and get under the tire.

So I finally get everything together. I properly inflated the tire to the recommended 120psi. I squeezed the rim and carefully inspect every inch of that thing. I have a seat, wipe my brow, admiring my hard work and patting myself on the back. I think to myself

"Take that wheel! You thought you would beat me, Ha Ha, but you were wrong. You're just an inanimate object, and I'm an intellegent human being."

No sooner did I complete my thought befor BANG!! Th f**ker exploded on me.

I'll be taking everthing to the LBS bright and early tomorrow.

you probably didn't have the bead seated completely in the rim right. i do that too. no biggie. new tube, try again, look to make sure the tire is completely in the rim.

I have a question for you (since you yousta' work there) does City Bikes regularly carry the tubes with the longer stems for deep-v rims? I need to go there anyway this morning cuz I need them to mount the new cog and lockring on my new wheel set, since I don't have the tools for that.

yup, every bike shop should carry longvalve tubes. city bikes does, and i think just about everywhere else does too.

i'm awake, have a lockring wrench, and have extra longvalve tubes. call if you want.

and give us a shout out if you're in AM. I think tink and i may ride this AM, but I'm likely to turn it into a 30 mi brunchfest. you should come.

On February 28, 2006 from 7 AM to 2 PM IHOPs across the country will celebrate National Pancake Day (also known as Shrove Tuesday) by offering our guests a free short stack of pancakes*. This is going to be our biggest one day celebration in our history.

Oh people. I am so excited. I finally found a steel frame. Hopefully i will have it by the end of the week. SO excited. I can't tell you what it is but it's red so you won't be able to see blood. Thing is so rawkin. NOT a polo bike. But hell if i ever stuck to my own rules.

Uh, yeah. So there was an emergency pancake issue raised a couple posts back. FYI, it is true. The FREE pancake dealio at IHOP ends at 2pm on Tuesday. But since we're not total tightwads, we can stay the course, buy our own dang flapjacks, and gorge as planned. Also, all proceeds from shortstacks sold on Feb 28 will go to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, of which I am unaffiliated, but recognize as a good cause.

Hope to see you all out for the super awesome Pancake Ride! There will be some challenging riding, a visit to the cradle of YARRLINGTON, drinking at a couple new exotic divey locales, and some more riding. And maybe some hurling.

yeah if you want to start your national pancake day (one of the few holidays worth celebrating) right, you'll go there at 7am and get yo free shortstack then go back for lunch. then pay a few bucks for dinner. it'll gaurantee either hurling or the energy to go the whole pillage. we missed out on the all you can eat pancakes by a couple weeks. like LBK said it goes to a good charity.

Eating "Berliner" or "Krapfen" which is similar to doughnuts is a tradition in Germany, but rather on "schmutziger Donnerstag" which was last Thursday and not today.
