This a little off-topic, but I must do my duty as a Screaming Eagle. DC United's arch rivals the New York Red Bulls (they used to be called the Metrostars, but were bought by Red Bull energy drink and subsequently renamed) is providing free buses to come down to our home opener against them on April 2. This means we as DC residents must show that we have a superior fan presence. Please consider coming to the game, RFK is merto accessable and has bike racks near the press parking lot.

This is isn't about being a soccer fan, it's about being a DC fan. Thank you for your time.

typing one handed while holding a bag of ice to my lower lip, which is the size of a potato...teeth are ok, says el dentist, but iago is finito...frame buckled in two places after colliding with a car in washington circle after cabbie cut us off. amazingly, all else on bike is perfercto, as is all else on me. so sad. i think he deserves a proper burial...

as they say in france, le bummer.

update: i had the choice of swerving left and risking major injury, swerving right and getting squished between a cabbie and this car, or just staying straight and sucking it up full force into the trunk of the car that stopped ahead of me. i chose the latter, and i kissed the trunk pretty hard (i had a helmet on, of course). Overall, i'd say i'm ok with the results of my decision. i know it sounds trite, but it could have been WAY worse.

which bike was it?

'Twas, alas, the '73 gios torino that i had spraypainted blue. Iago was his name. And he lived a good life. He died happy, doing his thing, zipping along. Funeral and internment plans to be announced shortly. Bereavement services available for all mourning riders.

*I may donate Iago's body to science...if anyone has, say, S&S couplers and a front half of a bike, this would be an aweome rear triangle to add to it...in that respect, Iago would live on...

Did you make a police accident report? will you be pursuing JUSTICE?

That's a funny story. so the we flagged over a cop car and the driver of the car i slammed into asked me if i wanted to file a report, to which i responded first by spitting out blood and they by mumbling yes. i should admit my intent, though: i wanted documentation, but i also wanted to intimidate ther driver such that she would feel guilty and offer to rescue Iago from permanent retirement. This did not work, though, as I'll explain. so cop rolls up, says to me, you know, if i file this report, you'll get a ticket? i say, what are you tallking about? he says, well you hit her from behind, so it's your fault. and i'm like, look, i just want the report. and he's like, i'll do it, but you'll get a ticket. so i say F it. he says can't do that. i say, friggin F it. he sayd, ok, fine, no report.

why was this ok with me? because the pinche cabbie who cut us both off had already gotten away...he was the dude i wanted to file a report with, but wham, he was outa there before i had a chance to disconnect my face from the trunk.

so, for the record, i wanted justice, or at least some form of documentation of justice, but our justice system is such puta that i just said screw it. i mean, after all, i have 3 other bikes.

i've also upgraded from ice in a bag to a frozen burrito pressed directly against my now thumb-size purple lip. goddamn puta madre chinga mierda pendejo...

J5 - sorry about the bike, glad to hear you're ok. Did you at least put a good dent in the car?

I hate the cabbies around here. I'm not sure why they drive the way they do. Either they think they need to be worse then the other drivers to scare them off,or they figure noone else is following the rules, why should they.

Chimbly - that sucks. I feel your pain. Reminds me of when my Cannondale fell over in the rack. :(

j5 - sorry to hear about the lip incident. on st patricks day you are supposed to kiss blarney stone, not bumpers. but at least you didn't get hurt. every time you can escape from bike vs. car with only surface damage to the body - its a good outcome. now if only bike could have survived. just curious, was it singlespeed and were you running brakes?

I use a 110. It's cuz i like a shorter top tube. so the stem makes up a little bit.

Uhhh. I find that your stem length in mm divided by 1.95 should give you a good idea of what you want on your bike.
For example, i rock (haha) a 130mm stem. hehe

also, stem length: ideally, bars are in such a position that when are sitting comfortably on the bike the the bars obstruct your view of the front hub. Whatever size stem does this is good.

i wouldnt call her a wreck. shes doing ok, no more crutch and shes started physical therapy for her arm, no surgery will be needed; she should be riding again in April.
also Chelsea should be riding again now.

This depends on your bike frame, your arm lenght, your upper body lenght, your flexibility, ....

I got good results with the measurements from the sizing system on this website:
wrenchscience.com

In the end it gives you, among other measurements, your approximate overall reach. Substract your effective (horizontal) top tube lenght from that overall reach and you get a relatively good approximate stem lenght.

poopncow
03-21-06, 08:20 PM
The whole stem blocking front hub thing is more like getting the right sized frame.

The stem should be between 100 and 130 for a roadies w relatively normal riding position. It is really a reach and angle of your back decision. Best start w 110 and play from there. Don't think there is really a formular that is right for everyone. Although it is a humanfactor thing, not every human has the same preferrences.

If it is a 1 1/8 threadless, I have a couple of stems you can barrow to try until you find the right one

=D Thanks...

OOOH... BTW J5, and i think CHimbly... im pretty sure you guys have the same sort of clipless system. I am currently riding SPD because they were used and cheap, so i figured hey 50 dollars is a good price for my first clipless system. It inclueded cleats, pedals, and shoes. But to the point... what sort of pedals are you two riding, and what do the cleats for them look like, they seemed easier to get in and out of, and i see more people rocking those on fixie than i do SPD. So if you could simply give me the name of the style, i would appreciate it. I am used to clipless now and i would like to obtain a new set.

spud
03-22-06, 02:00 PM
theyre using ATACs, a lot of pirates use eggbeaters or other Crank Bros pedal; a few are still loyal to the cheap SPD.

Indeed: Time ATACs. I dig the old aluminum model, cause it's cheaper, burlier, and available in blingy colors. The new version costs twice as much and is dark grey, and the last thing i need is more stuff the color of old dog crap. Check ebay for models around $50.

Egg beaters Rule!

Performance has a clearance sale on egg beater chromo (blue only) and the "candy" in yum yum yellow. 49.99 complete!

however, the brasss cleats do wear out faster than the harden steel cleats on other systems.

03-22-06, 03:25 PM
CB using brass is intentional. its much cheaper to build (and buy) a non-moving cleat than it is to build a pedal, hence the cleat is very replaceable and wears out faster than the pedal. that said the CB cleats will still last quite a while.
