The idea is to pull stuff off before anyone notices. All we had were drivers being annoyed because I was in the middle of the street tending the tag line and some cheerfully funny comments from passing ped's. It helps that we did this on a monday afternoon. The whole thing took 30 mins to prepare and 20 sec's to transit the 9 floors.

i took a measuring device (shaped like a road bike) out to haines pt this lunch hour in order to facilitate 1/4 mile sprints. for those of you interested in joining the fun in chicago next month, here are two useful 1/4 miles on haines...
just after the bend/the start of the one-way after the golf course entrance to sign 4
on the backside, the beginning of the bathroom crappypavement to about sign 20
(with the signs being the numbered parking lot signs)

Uhm-I think the explanation of apartment you're moving out of means he doesn't have an ongoing issue with the neighbors. Of course, one remembers the cartoons as a child of movers dropping the grand piano during such an effort.

Until my office moved to Alexandria in April of last year, I used to work accross the street from that apartment building-would've loved to seen that evacuation in progress. Congratulations on the evacuation. Where is the kayak now? How long did the lowering process take?

Edit: Disregard the duration question-I see it was previously answered.

Ahem. Pardon me.

Dear Dr. Raging Grizzled Old Commuter Man on a Hybrid from This Morning,

I just want to take the time, in case you're out there somewhere reading this, to really thank you for your thoughtful advice this morning on the ride in to work. Though unsolicited, I will heed your advice to acquire a prescription for Prozac asap because, it seems, I've been going about life totally wrong! And it took an esteemed medical professional like yourself to point it out to me-- firmly, yelling at the top of your lungs at a busy intersection-- and make me realize the error of my ways.

You see Dr. G., I thought there were rules and common courtesies for riding in a densely populated area, as on a trail with cyclists and joggers, and on roads with more cyclists and cars, etc. But, not so says Dr. Grizzled! When I passed you back on the trail, shoutin out 'on your left,' I was demonstrating my expectations of common courtesy. But then, not two minutes later, you powered up on the 14th street bridge to pass me needlessly out of nowhere (were you trying to impress me? >blush<), *without* saying a word, and thus surprising lil ol me because the trail was narrowing rapidly before us and I thought I had the right of way! I reacted because I was a little taken aback (at what I now realize was your expert maneuver). Sometimes fear for my own safety--I now recognize that to be my delusional depression altering my perception of things-- makes me do that! Mea culpa! I suggested you at least say "on your left" while passing in tight-squeeze situations such as this, when I might fall off my bike into a busy road. And when the morning light glinted in your crazy-with-rage-and-helpful-information eyes and you snapped in reply that I should "adjust my mood," my instinct said, let it go, this old man is nuts!

Alas, I can be a pill (ha!) and so I couldn't resist following up on your comments when we both stopped at the red light at 14th St. I got the feeling you really seemed to know me, you know? We made a connection. Making it all personal like that when I only tried to give you a road safety tip, “It’s called road etiquette!” And then I thought you might have misheard my cheeky, "Have a nice day, sir!!" Because then you started roaring about how there's medication out there for people like me! That gave me pause--gosh, like me? Rly? A crazy man would not rush into such a diagnosis rashly. That's when I realized you had to be a physician-- and a generous one at that, giving free medical advice on the street like you did. I have heard of Prozac, yes. But in the future, I don't think you should yell such personal information as my prescription that loudly. And with your veins bulging and beard grizzling, I thought for a sec you were going to explode. Have you heard of ace inhibitors? What am I doing?! You’re the expert. Your lucky colleagues and patients!

As we went our separate way--you, yelling helpful medical tips as you pedaled your panniers off, and me, I can only begin to try to return the favor. Until our chance encounter continues tomorrow morning...

04-19-06, 08:11 AM
yeah, when something like that happens i remind myself that his punishment is to be a miserable old man. so miserable in fact that he can't keep his good vibes up while riding his bike on a beautiful morning like today. that's a fate far worse than anything i could dish out. then i prescribe myself two cans of sparks (at least) and (in this case) a game of bike polo. i think we all know who comes out ahead.

04-19-06, 08:15 AM
LBK, awesome open letter. i think i've met this doctor before, but he was driving a car, and only had a few seconds to suggest a medical solution to my bike problem. Even though he was busy, obviously heading to the hospital in a hurry, he rolled down his window and took time out of his day to help me out. That was really generous of him.

Unfortunately, the guy I met in a car this morning was not a doctor. he refused to stop at a stop sign a block from my house, cut me off, and then gesticulated offensively in my direction. so i chased mr. DC tags BU-923 down, and gave him a DNA sample in the form of saliva on his hood. who knows, maybe his analysis will lead to a better informed diagnosis.

In other news, why ride Hains? come ride in rock creek park! 6pm-ish, beach and ridge rd. 5-mile time trials, up and down some good hills.

yeah, not so much.
talk about a sausage party!!!

what he meant to say, was that we played 4 on 4 polo at sherwood last night and it was insane
quarters were really tight and there was a notable increase in collisions

that being said, i was really impressed with the level of play from everyone last night.
it really seemed likek we were getting better.

In other non pole news, here are a couple items of local interest.

To follow up on my drunken talking points from the other night, on the subject of midgets and burritos, I tentatively propose a Midgets N Anita's Ride, date TBA. This ride will be WOD-centric (shout-out to Rince and Spud!) out to Vienna to see "Midgetville" before it is torn down http://www.roadsideamerica.com/tips/getAttraction.php3?tip_AttractionNo==4204
and to eat burritos, ideally their awesome .99 breakfast burritos, at Anita's.

Also, here's this: http://www.bscl.org/histride.htm
The route is pretty much the Arlington Loop (or Triangle, whatever), which is nothing too exciting, but it's fun to learn about history. That super-lame public art piece in Rosslyn is explained. Apparently, it's a henge!

whoa, midgetville! i went there a couple times as a kid (never harassed the residents, but they clearly didn't appreciate the company) no midgets, just slightly smaller houses, and a bit sketchy even if you're in a car. pirates go where they please, but gravel roads, angry locals, and fascist vienna police make it a dicey excursion.

i love the vienna inn, it reminds me of my childhood (they used to sponsor my little league team!). vegetarians might find their menu a bit limiting, but there's a whole foods across the street and two good veggie restaurants a short ride away. should be no problem finding something for everyone.

also i bet my mom would meet us at the bike path with some fresh baked cookies.

Polo last night was much awsomeness. Best we've had in a long time. :)

Glad there were no (human)injuries. Hope they can fix your fork,Tink.

The trip out and back was just as exciting as the play on the field. Idiots on Mass Ave parking in the right lane and Type-A taxi drivers on my way to Sherwood, almost getting taken out by a diplomat on the way home. People's getting nutsy with this warm weather. :(

Re: midget run. Sounds like a job for a MTB. ;)

Is Sherwood a park or rec center or what? 14 & K sounds like it must be just north of McPherson-correct? I have a physical therapy session tommorrow afternoon on my shoulder in Dupont and an vision stop at Farragut, so maybe I'll take half an hour to scout the location tommorrow.

How late do you play-till dark or do you have lights ovehead or do you continue in the dark or with headlights or is there a time cutoff?

Since the TT in Rock Creek park is the same night, does anybody wander over to Sherwood from the TT for a double header?

I'm mending a shoulder these days from a Mt. Vernon Trail crash-is this another potential source for more fractures?
