Rides and Races - DC Pirates' Pillages and Plunders

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Thanks for the hospitality, pirates. Sorry I missed out on the scavenger... stupid wheel. Next time!

new question about the bike... what gear ratio would be good... its a trial frame but i want it to be fixed... what gear ratio should i do so that stopping doesnt send me over the handlebars and so that it isnt too hard.

somewhere around 42-46x17 would probably be good. when are you coming up to DC again?

it's different for everybody. if you've got a road bike, just pick a gear and try riding around in it all day. of course, that only works if your wheels are the same size on both bikes, but it should get you pretty close. cogs are cheap, no big deal if you guess wrong.

At least I got my miles and speed in this weekend thanks in part to the pirate pelaton which came to the PPTC ride yesterday.

I have created a DC Pirate userbar so you can rep in all the threads and other forums...and...whatever else you kids are doing these days. So here it is:

To add the DC Pirate userbar to your signiture you follow these simple steps:
1) Drink some lemon juice to keep the scurvey away
2) Right click on the userbar and save picture as
3) Uplaod the saved userbar to Flickr or a similar photo site
4) Do a little jig
5) Use bike forums' own image insert tool (the little mountain thingy) to add the image
6) Drink some more lemon juice, the usebar may have given you scurvey

When you try to fit everything into one weekend, damn it is a lot of fun.
Pirate Pelaton at PTTC was a blast!
Hide and Seek was fun
Cookout at J5 was a chill way to round out the day
This week
Crit Mass Fri,
Eating all the yummy stuff I miss about NY on Sat
5 Buro Sunday
Add this to it!
Thursday! Hains laps followed by :
"a bridge too Pho"
Start with "hero" laps with the "red and white train", you NEED to be geared and roadied if you even want to think about tagging on the pelaton.
Then form up and ride the bridges to rosslyn and get to the noodle shop before they close the doors on us. Believe me, it is worth it!
Form up at club house and leave promptly at 7PM.

i've talked with folks about this and it's really just not true. if your gearing is right, you should be able to hang with the roadies. the problem is that most people are undergeared for the flat fastness of haines point, since we have to get to and from there somehow. But when I was riding the 3rensho 49x14, i could ride in the pack, no problems.

when are you coming up to DC again?
Actually spud, i should be up there in like 3 weeks... im going to greece with my parents and i get back a week before they do, so i figured i would drive up to DC to ride with the pirates and bring a friend fro NOVA with me... it's the kid who is getting the wheels from gil. Hopefully I will have the basso done by then also.
chimbley: missing a glove? haven't seen anything. i'll look around the backyard again. maybe Awesome's using it as a nest. or a chew-toy. also, wassa name of that bike group that pays people to bike to work?

You would absolutely hate the Basso I just built

i can't imagine hating that basso. it's got an understated elegance, like it doesn't need your approval.
also, in my dehydrated delirium i managed to lose my keys on saturday as well. i used them to unlock my bike from Asylum, and that's the last time i saw them. anybody see some on the ground? nondescript keyring, three regular keys (one with a pink plastic thing) and one little key with a black top. getting back into my apartment was a *****, not to mention clipping my bike lock in front of murky coffee
anyway, good times on saturday. way to go pirate peloton for "winning" the old fat guy training ride (if only they had known it was a race) and great times at the hunt. thanks again chimbly for putting it on.

How did you lock your bike in front of "murky coffee" (whatever that is) without a key? I can only open or close my locks with a key. Maybe you lost it there?

yeah, i spent a loooong time looking around that whole area, i'm pretty sure they're not there. thanks though. it was a cable lock, and i don't lock it to put it in my bag. so i locked it up before i even realized my keys were gone. they're pretty much replaced, but there's one that could still do me some good.

It does not escape me that this week is already busy what with A Bridge To Pho on Thursday and CM on Friday. But with this Saturday being Free Comic Book Day I simply had to float this idea:
Comics and Cutlasses Pillage
Saturday May 6, 2006
Leaving from Sherwood at 4:30
Pillaging Wisconsin Ave from Georgetown to Tenleytown
and every comic shop along the way.

You realise that once we hit Wisc,it's just a straight line,up a steep hill,on a busy road?
If I may make a humble suggestion;I'd start it earlier, then run from Tenley to the CCT,run that to Big Planet in Bethesda, and then get everyone back to Adams Morgan in time for cheap beers at Asylum. Either that,or run it off Wisc through some of the hilly sideroads, swinging back to Wisc to stop at a couple bars.

Yeah, I'm passing on polo tonight too, I need to do laundry to take with me to NY this weekend. Perhaps 3 bridges tomorrow though.
