who wants to meet up on tuesday/wednesday/or thursday and go riding/pillaging.
i need something going on after work in the middle of the week to maintain sanity.
i get off work at 6, so 7 is usually best for me so i can run home quick.
also, there are no grills at haines, so we need one of the following things:
1) a 50 gal drum, cinderblocks, charcoal, lighter fluid, something to hold food off the charcoal.
2) a charcoal grill.
3) a gas grill.
anybody want to volunteer one of these items?
also, we need somebody to transport said item to haines.
...volunteers...?
(food is really important to me, ha)

Spud, I wasn't speaking about your case. More an observation from dealing with a lot of bike accidents and police. If you get a ticket you are SOL. Being unconcious doesn't protect you either.

ryand...
here in chicago, some guys attached a trailer to a brakeless fixed steamroller and rode a grill, charcoal, sausages, peppers, and buns for 30 miles up to the track a few weeks ago. oh, and beer too. Did i mention the beer?
be creative! there's always a way to get it there by bike. i know chain reaction has a trailer...
yeah... but i dont have a grill...

However, since DC has hills lets use bike with brakes. Trailers are great especially with heavy loads up to 300 lbs. And it is kinda ****ed up when you are carrying such weighty loads. The fixed gears themselves become a liability. Makes you realize why the freewheel is an improvement.
Maybe someone would like to invite Jimmy, Carlos, Max and Omar from Chain reaction and they can bring the trailer. They are open now Thur and Fri. 11-6, Saturday 11-5.

However...
Why don't we have more trailers?
Joel?
In other news.
We have room in a very bike friendly house. Does anyone know anyone?

Re: tickets in the district. I was hit by a moving co's truck at Calvert and Connecticut about a year back and I was issued a ticket for "Failure to maintain lane." I had already been hit by this truck and I was _standing_ in a crosswalk trying to get the driver to stop. He ran over my bike and right foot trying to get away.
Luckily there was a witness who said she saw my foot under the truck wheel and me screaming and this made it into my pd-10 rpt. I sent in a contest by mail saying that I was using clipless and that there was no way I was changing lanes when the driver rolled over me. About a month ago I got a notice that I had successfully contested and that my $5 was revoked.
I also threatened to take Security Moving Company to small claims and they gave me $1000, which I hastily reinvested in all new goodies for my Hardrock

Maybe you'd like to invite them, since you know them.
Also, I know a few of us will be taking automobiles down there anyway, so it seems a little easier to just do that. Anyway, Ryan I leave the food end of things up to you since you seem on top of it. If anybody has a couple coolers for beer, soda etc... that'd be awesome.

I am not interested in having a CM discusion among the activist kids on the CM website. They have no message control, no interest in DC except as a staging ground for their protests and insufficient experience with bikes or riding.
You are having that discussion. This CM Kid, Mike Turner, has been invited aboard your Frigate, and all is better for it...the meeting of worlds and trading of thoughts. Word! I'm keeping Critical Mass open for anyone! Special credence goes to those who come with experience to build on with bikes or riding. I agree with your ideas about more boomboxes and festivity. I'm an anarchist (without ruler) with an agenda...promoting an environment for participation, creativity and an individual's integral sense for leadership to flourish while encouraging travel alternatives to automobile and reclaiming asphalt space from automobile domination. Guiding Critical Mass is something that any rider can do, most of us don't, but it's something we can learn. Don't try to manage Critical Mass, a ride without hierarchy as a core tradition. If you must organize a static management team, I believe you can build a ride within your vision outside of Critical Mass.
The Critical Mass email list is here: http://lists.mutualaid.org/mailman/listinfo/dc-critmass-list Let's build!
A request was made to share my experience from NY Critical Mass and NY traffic court here on the forum, so here is what I posted to the CM list:
I went to traffic court in Manhatten on June 12th, pleading not guilty to the charge of "disobeying a steady red light". I was issued a ticket the night of March 31, during Manhatten's Critical Mass.
That night: Shortly after me and the crowd of (very aproximately) 200 cyclists departed from Union Square, I'm talking within a couple blocks, I felt something running into me from my rear left. It was a scooter-cop. "Move to the right!" says he. I look over my right shoulder to see who's there as cyclists around me scatter away from the aggressive scooters. I saw another scooter-cop coming from my right/rear towards my direction. I accelerated forward. One of those two scooter cops grabbed my bag by it's handle, forcing me to a stop and ripping my bag. Then I was told "I told you to slow down!" I was asked for ID. I had my DC drivers license and handed it to Officer Peter Friore, who wrote me the ticket. The fee was 150.00 and a 50.00 surcharge. Friore told me I faced two points being tacked on my driving record. I convinced myself that I was picked on so early in the ride because I had a flag, upwards of 8 ft tall on my bike, and I was clowning with a clown wig, nose, and glasses. I pleaded to Friore as he scribbled his waste of time on that pad, "You singled me out!" He looked at my clown head and said in his very NY accent, "Ya! I singled you out!". I wasn't alone that night. About 30 others were issued tickets before the ride was over. I also heard that about 5 people were arrested.
It doesn't take too much imagination to see how dangerous it is for people on scooters to run into a thick crowd of cyclists, or grabbing at bags to stop those being hunted. These efforts of the nypd are hindering the flow of traffic. There is something for the traffic divison of the nypd to prove though, especially just after the court ruled that Critical Mass does not have to apply for a permit.
Not all was drowned in the saturating affection of nypd condensation... for me that night. After all, I was a clown! My flag was flying high! My friends Chelsea and Rasha hadn't abandoned me while the mass rode on! Legal assistance was near, monitoring the police, asking my name. Some people stayed behind to support and give advice. Someone said not to carry any ID. Someone said not carrying ID in NY is a legal violation -the police will ticket you for not showing ID when asked. Someone said carry a passport if you have one, instead of a driver's license. Someone said the 50 dollar surcharge and the 2 points is not true....HE WAS RIGHT! When I was found guilty in traffic court, my penalty was to pay 150.00. Freewheels (www.bicycledefensefund.org (http://www.bicycledefensefund.org)) and Times-up (www.times-up.org (http://www.times-up.org)) are two organizations that do a world of good for keeping Critical Mass alive and smart in NY. More on the glories of that night, Martina stayed with me and my two friends to help us find our way to another park where the Critical Mass was to go and wait for anyone who lost their way. You see, NY Critical Mass is getting smarter and organizing around the nypd obstacle. Location of a midway meetup point is advertised among those waiting to take off before the ride starts, so you can get beack with the ride if you are stopped. This worked great and helped me have a fantastic night! I told people what happened to me, pulling a never-ending chain of bandanas out of my pocket to wipe my clown eyes. Then the ride continued. There were breakbeats blasting out of somebody's backpack in a most inspiring way! There were times the police were not around at all. When they were following, we would stop at redlights.
Court: So did I run a red light? I don't know. But that's not good enough for a judge. So no, I did not, but I was from out of town in a bicycle procession of 200-300 cyclists and dressed very festively. Judge didn't believe I only ran a green light, and I was found guilty. But he was annoyed to high hell that he had another traffic violation of a bicyclist to deal with, interrupting officer Friore's testimony to scold him, "Is this another bicycle ticket?!", then continuing with a sigh. It seemed Friore felt a little stupid for having to go through with defending the tickets he issued, explaining that he ripped the bag a clown was riding with. After that little bit of my day in court, I rode around the island exploring, eating, record hunting and documenting addresses of old personal nyc ancestors.
I would definately ride NY Critical Mass again! I have a vision for festivity....the scooter cops are like bulls.....what better than: the Matador!
-Mike

Tuesday 25th, Pirate Pizza Night @ 8:30p (boomboxmike's), bring pizza toppings.
Yes! This Tuesday the 25th, 8:30pm at the 2336 2nd St NE, a corner rowhouse on the corner of 2nd and Bryant in NE, I'm hosting the next diy Pizza Night - a tradition started by beloved Favorite Tomato, Amy Concilio. As in the past, the pizza dough will be made and ready for whatever toppings you bring! We can make a salad with leftover toppings. I'm going to invite some neighbors to, so there will be at least two big pizzas.
From Shaw/NW: Rhode Island Ave east/north, left on Lincoln RD (soon after passing North Capitol ST), right on Bryant ST (second right), first rowhouse on right. Poopncow lives very close on this route. Ride with Peter...don't ride alone if you can help it!
What's that about?
its about keeping it awesome. Team DFL scored about a dozen prizes in Chicago, i only remember about 4 or 5 other people winning anything. a set of handlebars, a couple t-shirts, few tubes; doesnt cost that much. any other ideas?
