Rides and Races - DC Pirates' Pillages and Plunders

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Up for miles here, roadie gearing though, cause its my last chance to burn off some calories for vacation...
Saturday 3 choices:
CC - 40 Hilly - 9:30 - Howard County, MD
CC - 44 Hilly - 9:00 - Loudoun County, VA
CC - 65 Flat - 9:00 - Oak Ridge Park, MD
Sunday I'll be pairing up with Cap Hill bikes again - 35 miles, B-pace, 9am, usually to Bethesda, but there is a hilly and faster route that will go into Arlington. Last time we ended at Haines Point at 11:15am, just in time to see some other Pirates going round for Laps and Cheese :)
Anybody else wanna be a tough guy and do the flat ride Fixed?
If the mallets are at poop's I can grab 'em.
Saturday one choice:
MG - 50 Stairs - 8:00 - Philadelphia, PA - Help girlfriend move.

seems to me like a tough guy would do the hilly ride fixed and then go do another 20 miles ;)
let's see what julie's friend's cousin is up for before we decide.

you ought to check all the comments on that site recommending the rotafix "method" the advocate is a graphic designer and is citing a track racer, ie. Track racers don't stop and they skip lockrings b/c they often switch cogs. In other words neither person has any idea what they are talking about. You can get your cog tight...until it comes loose. You can do that with what is called the finger method. Needlenose pliers won't do anything but scar the edges of your lockring. If they help you get the ring loose it was never done right.
I am being gruff but, I am really tired of having this discussion at the shop. Rotafix isn't a method. Your bike is not safe without a lockring. Threadloc's and loc-tite are not an adhesive. They just stop it from vibrating loose. If you are going to use the 1/2 assed method. Please use something decent like JB weld and keep your brakes.
Are you in DC?
I will show you how to do it properly. As can many of the people on this forum. But FGS, use a lockring.

no one's talking about using rotafix to secure their cog. fixed gear on the cheap means a lockring and at least one brake as far as i'm concerned.
rotafix is a method of tightening a cog (without a chainwhip) BEFORE the lockring is tightened using proper tools. period. i would never send someone out with a suicide setup.
with that in mind, lets build some fixed gears.
Howdy. Just introducing myself i'm andrew and been cycling for the past 4 or so years. Mostly mountain biking, i race downhill and dirt jump, but i shattered my index finger earlier this summer so haven't been on those since. Picked up a redline 9.2.5 as a fixie to commute and have some fun riding some road. Figured i would introduce myself to the DC locals, don't know if ill make it out for any rides because of work but just saying hi.
BTW, if anyone is in fairfax and needs their bike wrenched on bring it by hudson trail outfitters where i'm a wrench at.

we venture your way out the w&od from time to time, and i grew up a couple miles from your shop, so next time i'm in the neighborhood i'll say hi. cheers and welcome.

ps- that cats name is chuck norris. yeah, i have strange friends.
So the cat is actually head-butting you in the face? Because I don't think Chuck Norris would let anyone bite him. Not because he fears for his own safety but because he knows you would break all your teeth.
yeah, that cat was kicking my ass and i figured i would try to eat it to save my own life. my teeth... they are now all fake.
Chuck Norris can set ants on fire with a magnifying glass. At night.
Chuck Norris doesn't play god. Playing is for children.
There are no races, only countries of people Chuck Norris has beaten to different shades of black and blue.
Chuck Norris does not own a stove, oven, or microwave , because revenge is a dish best served cold.
Chuck Norris can divide by zero.
Chuck Norris coasts on a fixie.
... don't you love the Chuck Norris fact lists? :)

eck, sorry had to miss polo tonight... anyway setting up a place to meet would be fine. I work at 1101 Vermont Ave NW. Either my chain is squeeking because it needs lube in the new position or the line is bad and needs to be respaced.
Thanks pirates

Anyways last night was a lot of fun. I just wish more people had shown up.
Even still 3 person free for all polo was great.
And we eventually got some 2 on 2 games in for a good time.
There's a great story behind this (http://www.flickr.com/photos/tink20seven/211700446/), but I just have to post the photo.

Sorry to offend but I never condoned not using a lockring. In fact I strongly encouraged the use of a lockring just so there wouldnt be any confusion. That was sarcasm about not using a lockring I thought emoticon carried that through, you are right track folks dont brake and should never brake and dont forget the weight weiny aspect any place to shave weight they will. You are right about needle nose pliers although I said needle nose vise grips which are completely different, these can strip/scar and generally mame your lockring. I did modify mine not have this problem. I do still feel that rotafixing a cog when you dont have chainwhip is a viable and safe option as long as you are using a locking that is secure. As for my sucide hub I built up to see if I liked riding fixed, I found a $10 bike at goodwill and converted it. I clearly state that I use a brake and jb weld as well as far more secure methods like mig welding. I am always open to learning so I might take you up on your offer when my new proper flip flop wheel arrives, but next time please read more carefully before you respond.

Is Washington Circle the one where the Foggy Bottom station is? 1:00 is better for me, but I'd go on an early lunch for that.
