thanks.

you found the right place, just read back a few pages. our scheduling consists of some back and forth and then occasionally a definitive post with a time and place.

Dan, Rides go like a few per week, and they can be easy going. Why don't you come out to the Lincoln Memorial, by the reflecting pool, at 8:30 to maruad with some of us tonight?

ok ok
sorry for the hold up
i'm still a little rough around the edges from last night 0_o

so the story goes like this -
we were minding our business and getting ready to play some polo
when this Crazy Naked Guy (©) comes running up the path and does a swan drive into the pond

graceful as sh*t, i'm telling you...

Anyways, he starts doing laps around the pond
(and keep in mind the pond is f*cking tiny)
swimming freestyle for god's sake
it was hillarioius
comedic gold

oh but it got better!

having taken a refreshing dip (and his fill of bird urine),
he gets out, takes off down the path,
and proceeds to entertain his captivated (albeit horrified) audience by hopping backwards and forwards over the chain fence

balls a wagglin
it was crazy

god I love dc

you'd probably be fine. alternatively i will hopefully have a spare fat tire bike (assuming all goes well with picking the frame up from ups)

Further out on the C&O the gravel gets really rough. I rode a few miles on it with my road bike and it was terrible. It's doable, but the narrow tires and high tire pressure transmit everything. My hands and arms hurt after about 3 miles.

maybe i'll look into putting a set of nobbies on there. that could be cool...

i didnt have much of a problem on the summer solstice ride, but we rode at a slower pace. but the next day or so my wrists were fatigued. i forget which handlebars i had on at the time, i think a pair of cinelli drops, definitely wear gloves.

sounds like a plan.

SUNDAY
fat tire pillage
10:30 a.m.
meet under the key bridge (on the canal, not K street)

EDIT: skinny tires of course welcome. this will be for the most part hard packed dirt so you'll be ok. bring patch stuff just in case.

dirty, how do I get below the Key bridge? End of K Street?

poop, is that spare fat tire still available? Do you think it would fit me?

anyone, approximate total mileage? Time of return?

poopncow
09-09-06, 12:15 PM
It will fit you.

you should come here and pick up on way to ride

depending on how far we go...30- 50, est avg 14 mph, so it'll end in mid late afternoon.

take M to Wisc, then turn down hill and then right when street ends

Weeeeeeeee!
It's what a Maraud-A-Thon sounds like! :D

My eyes upon October 6 Critical Mass. The butternut squash crop is looking healthy and should be swell then. What say you all to a squash grill after October's Mass?
I know....what to do with grilled squash? Well, it can be kabobed with mushrooms, onions. It can be sliced thick and put in pita with humus and greens. Make it spicy for the beers! It's all about the grillages until the freeze comes.

Are you coming for Critical Mass, Julie?

Chelsea will be here for Critical Mass! October can be the rockinest!

need shenanigans NOW!!!!

just had some dinner in C town and then some nerd in a fletcher boat house polo driving a beat up civic started giving me **** about riding in sat traffic vice the sidewalk "where is the logic in that" then he proceeded to stalk me from on 9th St from H st to Constitution. The funniest part was that he tried to get out of the car, decided not to when my hand touched his window and then was all angry because I touched his car. but the silliest part was when he insisted that I tell him my name.

Suppose he had a bad date ... esp one that did not appreciate his ego-free vehicle...is this why people buy hummers? or pick fights with bikes? regain your manhood? o

i rode the iro the entire way on my 700x23s. it wasnt terrible until this morning when my wrist told me to die. i did have gloves though, and they probably saved me a lot of pain. yesterday was a lot of fun, and afterwards we cleaned my headset and bottom bracket, then made my bike left side drive. so now it looks silly and ride stealthy. and im super happy.

thanks peter, for being a pedal engineer and grill master. im gonna take them off tonight and put some loctite on the threads so i dont have to worry about my pedals falling off. but i will still be sure to check them often.

edit: this was forwarded to me by a coworker (http://media.www.theeagleonline.com/media/storage/paper666/news/2006/09/11/TheScene/Critical.Mass.14.Years.Of.Activism.And.Bikes-2264871.shtml?sourcedomain=www.theeagleonline.com&MIIHost=media.collegepublisher.com). hey, most of us are in it too. chimbly and joel should sue for taking their photos.

I know this is so going to end up being the last message on this page but ...

With the Seagull Century coming up in less than a month and me being paranoid about finishing, I'm going to hit some high mile weekend rides. In case anyone wants to join in (gears recommended), here's what I'm up to the next few weekends.

Saturday Sept 16th: DC B-63mi Metric - Starting at Statue of Ghandi
This is a rolling hilly ride where the hills never let up (its not front loaded like I thought!). Last time, it was Photons, Baldy, PNC and Me. I'm planning to start early (9am) since last time it seriously kicked our ***** and took us forever.
Sunday Sept 17th: Some generic BB-40mi
Not sure where since all the PPTCer's are doing the PPTC Century today. I have a few queue sheets that I'm going to go through, or I was thinking of just doing CCT to Rock Creek twice or something as a recovery.

Saturday Sept 23rd: Haines Points Loops but more likely CCT-Rock Creek (~30 miles) in the evening. I'm helping my friend move Saturday morning, so the long ride was moved to Sunday.
Sunday Sept 24th: PPTC B-68mi - Marshall, VA
Morning start time of 9am. B/BB pace. This is going to be hilly too, climbing in Bluemont and then decending to the Shenandoah. I'll be driving to the start, leaving around 7:45am, and can probably stuff another bike with me. This one's gonna be hard but 70 miles in the hills will make the flat Seagull easy.

Saturday Sept 30th: PPTC BB-67mi Layonsville, MD.
The ride starts at 9am. Like last week I'll be driving to the start point around 7:45am. Not sure what the route is like, cause I've never started from there before but from where Laytonsville is on the map I'd expect rolling to hilly.
Sunday Oct 1st: PPTC CC-45mi Poolesville, MD
Only one ride schuled by the PPTC website for today, if something better comes along, I'll change it but this could be a recovery from yesterday's ride. It starts later, 10am and Poolesville is only about an hour from DC by car. The terrain up there is rolling but not bad at all. It should be a good chance to just spin recover?

During the weekdays I'm going to try and get in some after work rides if its not raining. I'm thinking of Tuesday-Wednesday-Thurday starting around 5:30ish and either doing a loop from Sherwood into Georgetown and the CCT and then going to Bethesda and coming back in through Rock Creek via the roads. It should be enough time to do and still get to polo ...

Ryand, congrat on being the first lab mice :)

If you carry a 15 mm open end you can use it for the wheel nuts and as a ped wrench

remember ... now your RIGHT crank pedal is LEFT HAND threaded

RPC, are you worried that you are going to die in So Md and then you'll be left on the side of the road, and a hundred (century) seagulls fight over who gets to peck out your eyes?

We are all going to finish and we're all going to be in under 6 hrs, unless we do nothing but sit and eat donuts for the next 3 weeks.

Of course I'm worried! 100 is still an intimidating number to me. I avoided it all through middle, high school, and college. I liked the 60's and 70's much more. ;) And the the whole thing in under 6 hours with the rest stops, that's impressive and I wanna keep up!
