I'm looking for a cool starter bike for my boy.
He's pretty pumped about getting a two wheeler. <start fixie content>He knows the diference between my fixie and his mother's SS. I'm not going to put him on a fixie right away<end fixie content>. I'm looking for some hipster bike companies that would offer something for a 5 year old. I don't want MTBs, BMX's and the like. What I'd like to find is some of those low rider, chrome, apehanger style bikes. I'm asking here because you guys are all that. Anyone got links?

I think electra sells boys 16 and 20 cruisers. Check schwinn also for the low rider style new stingrays.

Electra makes kids bikes that look differentish. And have lots of LBS distribution, so they should be easy to find and test ride.

Given that he's a 5 year old, your choices are going to be limited by his size. My 7 year old, for example, was only able to ride a 20" BMX bike as of this year. That said, there are some very cool bikes for kids made by Electra. The 16" Mini Rod might be workable http://www.electrabike.com/04/bikes/06bikes/kids/06_kds_10.html.

If you don't mind buying used, there are some shops that sell vintage american bikes that are pretty classy. (I have no idea about sizing for a 5yr old, but you can find some Jr stingrays for a decent price if you look hard enough)

is custom outta the question? I'd love to see a Vanilla jr. bike all pimped out with custom lugs and bling bling wheels laced to jr. Phils.

This one from Electra looks hot! I know my kids would've wanted to rock one of these! http://electrabike.com/04/bikes/06bikes/kids/06_kds_09.html

Check the local LBSes like Tommy & Lefebvre, Full Cycle, the one on Carling near MEC, and a bunch of others I can't remember and I'm sure you'll be able to find something. I remember when Poison Spider (on Rideau) had the Litespeed tricycle! Damn nice ride but crazy expensive!

Unless you go custom, I don't think you'll find much for a 5 year old that isn't a mountain bike/bmx. Good luck though.

I miss Ottawa. Hope to visit this Christmas. My wife and kids haven't been back since Fall 2001!

i like the fact that even the sales copy on the website says "no brakes" right along with "training wheels" and other safety features. like it's a selling point for the bike they're going to let their precious child ride... "no brakes!? sold!"
i saw a girl at kissena who couldn't have been too far away from 10 yrs old riding the cutest little track bike you've ever seen while wearing baggy bike shorts. must have been a 35-40cm or so.

Thanks all.
I'm going to hunt for an old Jr. Stingray. Second runner up is going to be this low rider; http://www.cartelbikes.com/index.php?action=item&substart=0&id=14.
Speaking of kids on bikes...I remember in my "serious" riding days, our coach use to bring out his daughter on our Sunday morning rides (60Kms+). She couldn't have been more than 11...but man she could kick it with the rest of us. When she got tired, her Dad made us tow her (she would hang on to our seat back). Good times.

Dude sweet, your kid'll look like the youngest dealer on the bloc. That bike is pretty sweet though.
