I was wondering what kind of improvement I would get if I bought road tires to replace these dirt tires?

Not as much as buying a road bike. With slicks you will find you roll further mostly due to the higher pressure of the tires. I have riden my MTB like this for short rides but anything over 10-15miles I find the road bike to be way better.

A quieter ride with some better cornering too.

My patrol bike is a pretty standard mountain bike with road (Continental) 1.95 X 26 tires. I inflate them to the max listed, 60 pounds, and get a pretty comfortable ride.

The bike is set up with a mild riser bar with slight pullback, for an upright position. (we need to be able to see...) Quite comfortable for tooling around the campus, and capable of a fair turn of speed. I would think such a bike would be a fine commuter for shorter trips.

For anything past 5 miles or so, I'd rather ride one of my roadsters.

I am building up a base of miles. Having only one bike at the present, I thought getting some road tires might be better. If I start going on group rides, road tires might give me a better chance of keeping up.
