I was looking at Dirt Drops and Midge bars...but the amount of FLARE (http://www.act1and2.com/new%20act%20site/midnightpictures/officespaceflair.jpg) was just too much and they felt weird (well only tried the dirt drops)

I went with the Salsa Bell Laps and have been stoked.

what's the advantage of running either one of these styles of bars over standard drops?

The flare is super comfy when on the drops compared to the standard deal...also provides a bit more leverage....I am biased though....I'm coming from standard drops that were a bit too narrow, I'm just happy to breathe!

I am running Moustache on my fixed gear road and love them for that purpose, nice leverage when climbing.
Are you running them for cross? If so what brake lever, shifters do you use?
Thanks.................

I'm running them on my fixed cross bike, and my touring bike. fixed is just a pair of cranecreeks one made into a dummy lever, on the tourning bike the same levers with barcon shifters
