hey, can we give 500 points to the winner and 100 points for everyone else? or we can have it so that third place gets 10000000000 points. yeah!

sorry, can't make it this week. i have to mind the shop.

gnawa

no sweat - it'll probably be a small group tomorrow night so we may just do a ride, depending on how people feel.

But you do get 125.25 points for replying.

Good ride/race tonight guys. All 4 of us get an extra 150 points for showing up!!

Recap:

s_9 got 100 points for being one step closer to not being a newbie + 100 bonus points for not being a newbie + 100 points/lap for the 4 laps he soloed before we started + 150 points for showing up.

Mr Monster Legs got 250 points for winning the intermediate sprint + 150 points for showing up.

Matt gets 200 points for winning the "king of the mountains" jersey + 150 points for showing up.

gnawa got 400 points for winning the final sprint - 300 points for cheating + 150 points for showing up.

So far the standings are:

1. s_9 750 pts.
2. Mr Monster Legs 400 pts.
3. Matt 350 pts. + 3rd place bonus 10000000000 points*
4. gnawa 250 pts.
5. Msngr 125.25 pts.
6. evanyc 100 pts.
7.marcelinyc -5 pts.*

* subject to change

I strongly encourage everyone to show up (if nothing else it'll still get you some points). The first lap is a warm-up lap (at least when Mr Monster Legs isn't at the front) and the pace will be kept slow enough for the group to stay together. Non racers should come out and ride at least the first lap.

Next race next Tuesday 8pm.

I made that myself. Wanna know what's even better? The pieces I made it from were originally cut out of construction paper. It was all part of this grand scheme I had to create an animation for the bike film fest. I largely abandoned it after I cut out those four bike frames.

Delicious. Everyone support marcelinyc at that Thai restaurant he delivers food for on 5th Ave in Park Slope right down the street from my sister's place. (I can't remember the name).

The wheels aren't square. You're square. They're round-ish.

marcelinyc
09-29-05, 03:24 PM
But u can make them square. The place is called Long Tan between union and sackett on 5 ave. come hang out with the polish hammer.

I go there all the time but I always pick up my own food. From now on I will ask for the hammer. They have a brilliant beer on tap there.... Dentergems? something like that. I live two blocks from there -- when do you hang out?

na, klar... it's okay to be lefty, isn't it? we all ride bikes, many of us for a living... so let's not be too delusional about where our politics lie, okay!?

also FYI i am being kind of serious here... agree or disagree: a messenger almost requires a leftist set of core political convictions... otherwise his/her lifestyle and politics are in basic conflict and he/she risks spontaneous combustion...

I saw like 4-5 fixies hanging around CP @ 5th & 60th at ~ 8pm tonight. Hope you guys had a good race.

So here are some thoughts/ comments/ critiques on the Central Park races. I thought the reason Gnawa changed the races from 10pm to 8pm was because people were saying it is too late. Well since the time has been changed, no one new has shown up. I think if we are going to keep the CP races going, we should move the time back to 10pm. The main reason for moving the time back is because the park is still very busy at 8 and even 9pm.

However, since everyone coming to the race is from Brooklyn, would it be okay to have another race night at PP instead? I realize Gnawa works uptown and the Bronx and CP offers a change of scenery, but I think overall we would get more of a showing. This wouldn’t have to interfere with the Thursday night races. Instead, we could do longer individual races (say 6-lap races).

s_9
10-05-05, 08:13 AM
I'd show up to the CP races only because I work in Manhattan, and wouldn't mind going for a few laps before I go home. Work ends around 6pm though. As it is, I have to kill 2 hours. If it were 10pm, I probably wouldn't do it. If it were 7pm...now we might be talking.

I definitely vote no for 10pm. As it gets colder & darker, less people will be in the park earlier.

noumena9
10-05-05, 10:35 AM
well, just to reiterate: aside from Ceya and gnawa no one has shown up for a CP race regularly that is not coming from Brooklyn. CP race turnout is really low (4 riders last night and I'd put the average at 5 tops overall.) And CP is a long way to go from Brooklyn to race in a race that you wish were in Brooklyn in the first place. Additionally from a Brooklyn point of view races in Manhattan at 8 are a pain in the ass. Not enough time to go home, but people who work in Manhattan have to hang out betwen 2-3 hours waiting for the race, etc. It ends up being something that takes up my time for 4+ hours and given the turnout and the resulting lower enthusianm it is hardly worth it.

SO I guess the question is this: If I stop going (which I think I'm planning to at this point) and Tyler stops going too and all the people who say they are going to come but don't still don't come then the race will be between 0-2 people.

If we want two races per week another set of options needs to be explored. PP races are doing awesome and I'm optimistic they will survive the winter and the very fact that we regularly have 20+ riders at PP seems to point to there being good chances of having more thant 4-8 people show up there for a second race. Also there are a lot of people that want to do individual races at PP, too, which the Thursday night races try to avoid to keep the competition balanced and the fun level up.

CP races are only eeking by at this point and at this point it is starting to get to the point that the only reason I'm showing up for them is that I want there to be two races per week (even though there really isn't.)

s_9
10-05-05, 11:14 AM
Maybe it shouldn't be a "race", per se. I think I'll get myself into the habit of riding in CP on Tuesdays. Some tuesdays, at least. I'd probably start at 6:30. If anyone wants to join, feel free. If we feel like it, we can throw in a sprint or two just for a bit of competition.

gnawa
10-05-05, 03:02 PM
I'm definitely in favor of relocating to PP for a second night of races. More people will show up and it'll be more fun in general. I'm also up for rides in CP, perhaps earlier like s_9 suggested.
btw, I'm really sorry I didn't make it last night, I was sleeping. 8pm is just too late!

Brandon and I were there (in CP) and we got a good ride in before the rain started coming down. It's too bad that this location is so inconvenient for so many folks because the ride in CP is really nice I think. If enough people want to ride, and show up, we could try riding at 8pm in CP before 10pm races in PP. Any thoughts?
