General Cycling Discussion - How can I return a cycling gift?

My Birthday was on Monday, and I recieved a bicycle lock as a present from my mother, here is my problem, the shackle is too small, and I am having trouble locking up my bike, I dont' want to hurt my mothers feelings, but at the same time, I don't need a lock that I can't use either, I am afraid that she will ask me if I am using the lock, and I don't want to disappoint her, by saying that I need a bigger lock, and she will be disapointed that she got the wrong size of lock, what should I do??

does she ever see your bike if not just exchange it for a larger one and if she asks just tell her how much you love it, a little white lie never hurts.

If your mom bought you a sweater that was the wrong size, how would you deal with it?

"Mom, thanks so much for the lock. I really needed one, and it was so thoughtful. There's just a small problem. The shackle doesn't quite fit around my bike. I need to return it for a slightly larger one. I love you, mom. You're the best!"

It would work with my mom.

Exchange it. She probably won't notice and if she does just tell her the other one was great, but a little small. I'm sure she would rather you have something you can use.

If you need a new lock, just exchange it for the one you need.

How likely is it that she simply tried to buy you a lock for your bike? How likely is it that she specifically chose the type, size or brand she gave you on purpose? If she did, then she meant for you to have one that was too small and therefore useless. That doesn't sound like a thoughful caring gift giver to me.

After you exchange it, you can still tell her, "Thanks. I needed a lock and now I have one thanks to you."

If your mom is anything like mine, you'd just buy a smaller bike.

she'll probably not notice it, go ahead and exchange it and in the long run you too won't ven notice it to..............

I'd go with RegularGuy. Honesty is the best policy. Tell her the present was really great, you love her to bits ( I assume you do) and tell her the truth.

webist it is quite likely that she chose the lock because I told her that I needed a new one, and why would she buy a lock that i couldn't use on purpose as a gift, yo udon't know my mother so how can you say she doesn't sound like a thoughtful giftgiver to you :mad:

I'm with ngateguy.
If she isn't a cyclist and you exchange it for a larger size of the same brand/model she probably won't notice the difference.

If you exchange it for another model or brand, then you'll have some explaining to do. :D

webist, I aplogize, I reread your post and it is unlikely that she chose this lock on purpose, I told her I neeed a new lock, and I assume that she thought she was getting the right lock when she bought it, I hope no harm was done with my previous post. :beer:

No harm at all sir. I'm pleased you have a Mom who supports your hobby. I knew if you reread my post you'd see that I actually think your Mom is a sweetheart.;)

webist, I think she is a sweetheart as well, thanks for your kind words about her, she is the one who bought me my first bike, it was a surprise present a few years ago, all of a sudden we showed up in the LBS and she bought me a bike for my birthday, I ride it everyday, and when I do I think of her. :beer:

problem solved people, I went to the LBS, and asked them if I could exchange it for a bigger one, they said yes, I did, and I told my mother and she is happy, because I am happy, all is well.:beer:

Yea, well, that still doesn't make Webist a stand up guy!;)
