Difference between a hardtail and full squissy? That's always a huge debate. If you're just looking for a good all around bike, and can spend more money, I suggest going full suspension. Sure, it weighs more, but you'll be more comfortable and will be able to ride longer and over various terrain w/o complaint. New designs like the Jeykll are marked improvements over bikes just 2 or 3 years ago. The Jeykll has a "Trunion" mount for the rear shock that allows it to adjust the geometry of the bike for different conditions.
If you're a racer boy and concerned about getting the lightest possible go with a hardtail. You will become a better rider by wanting to choose smoother lines and your climbing technique will be better. I ride a F2000 and really enjoy this for XC type riding. I don't race a lot, but when I do this is my choice for bikes.
