Bicycle Mechanics - Ultegra STI Shifting

The cx bike i purchased off E-Bay was just delivered and, having zero experience with STI, I've run into a problem. When I shift into my 12t the chain skips right over and lodges agains the frame. Is this simply an adjustment issue?

Yes.

1. Put the bike on the workstand. If you don't have a stand leave it on the ground; a stand just makes things easier.
2. Shift to the small rear/large front.
3. Turn the high limit adjustment screw (probably the front one) until the jockey pulley lines up under the small cog.

While you are at it check the low limit. In fact low limit is usually set first.
1. Shift to the big rear/small front.
2. If necessary, turn the low limit adjustment screw (the other one) until the pulley lines up under the big cog or possibly a teeny bit inboard.

If you don't already have one, buy a book on bike repair and maintenance. It will save you time, money and headaches.

It explained deraileur adjustment step by step. And Im shifting like mad now!

Especially for a CX bike, you might want to double-check the low-gear limit screw too, to ensure that it's providing a positive stop to discourage the derailleur from dropping the chain on your spokes. What kind of bike did you get, by the way? :)

Yeah, I printed the directions from Park Tool. I also adjust the L setting MechBgon - thanks for the suggestion. It is a nicely upgraded Redline Conquest Pro, fun bike and I'm amazed how well it handles on dirt and deep gravel.
