Mountain Biking - what size will fit my bike?

i'm going to order a new crankset/bb

and i'm not sure what size to select for my 05 trek bruiser 1.

do i choose 68/113 or 68/118?

i tried using the 'contact' function at the trek site but nobody got back to me.

and if you can help me with this, can you might as well tell me if it's a good purchase? i'm going to take off the bash and only keep one ring, and add an e13 srs guide/bash.

What size & brand BB came out?

I just replaced my cranks & BB from old LX square taper to new octalink.
The old BB was 113mm & I ordered a 118mm.
The 118mm was to narrow with octalink cranks (the octalink seems to squeeze tighter on the spindle) so I ordered a 126mm and it worked just fine.

If you already have a splined BB I would assume you could order one the same size that came with the bike.

well i'm not going to be the one taking the bb out so i don't know...

If you can remove your cranks you can measure the spindle width without removing the BB. But I'm guessing you don't have a crank puller if you don't have a BB tool.

You could take it to a bike shop and let them figure it out before ordering.

You should consider doing to the work yourself, the tools needed are under $25.
It's as easy as turning a wrench!

BB spindle width is usually more dependent on the crankset. According to Sheldon Brown's BB Database, you need a 113mm with the Holzfeller.

but in this case it can't be dependent on crankset because i have the option to choose. so i guess the bb fits either way. so i'm not really a bike person but that would then lead me to believe that now the bb size is dependent on the bike...

Both BB will fit on your bike (assuming your bike takes a 68mm BB and not a 73mm BB), the varying number is the spindle width. The 118mm BB will just space your crank rings further away from the frame when compared to the 113mm. This will affect your chainline.
