I got up and packed up some sandwich food in my pack for a possible hike that would never materialize due to weather. I rode down to the Moon Over Naikoon Bakery and spent a few hours there. I met Shannon, who was filling in for Wendy. Pam and Jen were there, talking about building saunas and bathhouses. I told Pam I’d stop by her house, which was currently being built, for a look later on. I met a couple, Dan and Jennica, who stopped in for food and had been camping out on North Beach. They were on their way back home to Vancouver and had gotten pretty wet and cold the past couple of days. We had some good conversation at the bakery before moving on towards Sangan Drive where Mich and Sunnay’s house, and Pam’s house were being built. I took them to both houses for a look. We checked out Pam’s last and she gave us a tour of the work in progress and told us about the stackwalling technique. Stackwalling is where you use mortar around fire killed (dry) wood to build up your walls nice and thick for self-insulation and a more organic look. Dan and Jennica said goodbye and headed towards Masset for a nice shower and sauna at the recreation center. Pam and her 3-year-old daughter Salal and I picked peas out of her garden for a while and talked before heading back to her place for dinner. She roasted up some potatoes and made a nice salad, all from the garden. Ra-Ra came over and so did Erin for a bit. Erin lives in Pam’s old bus that resides by her garden on her new property. He has been helping Pam out a lot with the building of her house. After dinner, it was back to Pam, Salal and I. Pam and I had a good time hanging out and I enjoyed hanging with her daughter as well, drawing on the chalkboard, flipping through her new book, and watching her eat all the M&M’s out of my trail mix. Eventually, it got late and I headed back to my tent. It had rained quite a bit in the day and there was a little water in the tent, but fortunately not too much for my paktowl to handle. Tomorrow I think I’ll help Pam and Erin stackwall at Pam’s house and see what that’s like. (11 miles)
