Commuting - Question for SoCal commuters

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Hello, I'm wondering about safe commuting routes for getting to the San Fernando Valley from the Santa Clarita Valley, as well as from San Fernando to Santa Monica. Does anyone ride Sepulveda through the Sepulveda pass? It seems a little unsafe to me, as the speed limits (and maybe some of the drivers) are quite high. Does anyone use any of the roads through Beverly Hills/Bel-Air? I'm asking because I plan on bike commuting (one-way per day) from Santa Clarita to El Segundo and am looking for safe routes. I've checked BikeMetro and except for the two passes, their route seems doable. Thanks in advance.

Santa Clarita to El Segundo is quite a commute. That's 40 miles. With the 2 mountain passes, stop lights, it will take you 2.5-3.5 hours! Sepulveda from the San Fernando Valley to Westwood is fine, I've done it a couple times.

instead of sepulveda why not use a side street? i live in sherman oaks by whole foods, and i know woodcliff goes on the east side of 405 up to mullholland, then down to roscomare, thru bellaire and into westwood
wow that's a long ride
Thanks for the words of encouragement. Does this mean I'm officially crazy? lol I'm not so worried about mileage/time. I've been riding after work for 3 or so hours a day with alot of climbing, so the one way commute will be tiring but doable (at least in my mind). I think the only problem will be the evening ride home/morning to work ride turnaround. But in any case.... I've driven down roscomare before and was worried about the lack of shoulder and crazy driver combination. Do drivers see bikes on this road? Have you ever ridden Beverly Glenn Blvd? Thanks again.

Gotta say it again; that's a hell of a ride. I commute from Castaic to Burbank. I ride The Old Road over the Newhall pass, then follow it as it turns into San Fernando, all the way to the airport. It takes me about an hour and 45 minutes. I can't imagine continuing on for another 15 or 20 miles and another major pass. Then again, some people here at work think I'm crazy for pedaling the route I do. So I guess it's all relative.
If I were heading for El Segundo I'd go ahead and use Sepulveda. But I'm used to riding in some pretty heavy traffic. Man, that's a long ride.
