Alright I want to upgrade from my hardrock. I have recently discovered an incredibly sweet place to bike. I went yesterday and I have never had that much fun on a bike. I bent my cassette, so I'm really looking at getting a new bike. Its in Toccoa, GA I rode the ATV trails above the college here. One thing is it takes a 3 mile climp to get to them. I really like hardtails, I've never truely ridden a full suspension (only around my uncles bike shop). I think I want a Specialized Rockhopper pro disc all mountain (the one w/ the 130mm Marzocchi Drop Off fork). The ATV trails are mainly 2-4ft jumps, I was wondering if the Rockhopper can hold up to this, I know every one says a HT is better at dirt jumps. But I do so much more than dirt jumps alone.
I'm going to attempt to show you what the ATV trails are like.
/ = 2-4 jump

________/________/__________/_______/_________/_________/

Then some stuff that looks like a giant rounded stair case.

Keep in mind that what goes down, must come up. Baisically we have to climb everything if we want to go down it.
I really need to know if the fram itself will do ok. As parts break/mess up (I hope they don't) I will upgrade to more durable parts.

Any advice would be great.

Thanks

Do the jumps have landings? If they are fast smooth jumps with little or no landings, then a Full Suspension bike would be great. Hardtails are great for dirt jumps like this:

Ok, Well they are more smooth than that I guess. I'll try to find some pics of jumps like the ATV trails have.

Well like I said its an ATV Trail, so is like dirt bike jumps, just smaller. If you mean by a landing as in a hill going down then no, you hit the jump, get air, then land on flat ground.

You'd be better off looking at the P series (http://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCBkModel.jsp?sid=06) from Specialized if you're intending on riding stuff like that.

I'm not planning on doing tricks off them. Just getting air is all I wan't, I may eventually start tilting the bike sideways.
Is the P. Series any good at climbing?

What do you guys think about the Gary Fisher GED, I really want a 19'' ish frame. If I were into xc then I would be on a 21" frame. I currently ride a 19, and I don't want to go smaller than this. What sizes does the P. Series come in?

What about the GED, I've heard good stuff about it.
What do you guys think?

I still can't find where it tells the frame sizes on the P. Series

I think you're better off with a High School Diploma.

As for the frame sizes:

Some of the specs for the two different sizes are wrong...the Large is smaller in every spec except for Standover Height and Head Tube.

That's a straight unedited screen shot from the Special Zed site. Any errors are their's not mine. The point being there's a Small and a Large size. Probably didn't parse the tables right or smething.

Well yeah, i saw the large and small, I wanted to see the frame size in inches like all normal bikes.

Nobody has told me anything about the GED yet.

By the way I'll have a High School Diploma 2.5 years. I hope it doesn't take me that long to get a bike.

If you want to see the size in inches, just divide the seat tube length (center to top) by 25 to get inches.

kona is a front runner in dj bikes. this bike will get you up some climbs too.

then, the p3 is a great bike and specialized is a great company so its really your call.

eagle897

Well the Kona only comes in frame sizes up to 17.5" and I want bigger than that. I have to get a Gary Fisher, Trek, or Specialized. Because my uncle owns a bike shop, and he only stocks those brands.
Out of these companies do you really think the P. Series would be best? I mean I do have to climb everything I want to ride down.
So I need a bike that can climb.
Can the P. Series do that?

I DO NOT DO TRICKS, well tricks like flips or spins or crazy stunts. I don't intend to do that.
I guess nobody knows anything about the GED

out of those brands i would get the specialized no doubt. they are a very reputable company, and that bike is said to be good. you can climb, but it will be a little hard and you are going to hate it.(most likely)

eagle897
10-02-05, 07:53 PM
The bike must be able to climb, I have a freakin 3 mile climb to make before I get to anything. I really don't want a P. Series.

well if you want a dj bike you arent going to get a good climber, thats just how the bikes are made.

i dont mean to be. . . mean(for lack of better words)

Ok, how much more durable is an 06 Rockhopper Pro Disc All Mountain,
than an 00 Hardrock Comp. Only one trail around here has dirt jumps, everything else is cross-country / xc type stuff. I would like speed and the ability to climb. I can ride the trails I'm talking about on my old Hardrock, so is a rockhopper more durable than an old Hardrock? I'm only gettin 4-5' of air max. The stuff I could get big air off of I would need a FS Freeride bike for. Right now for me its between a Gary Fisher GED, and a Specialized Rockhopper.
