View Full Version : Why do I agonize about hubs?

So, I just ordered a pair of 28h Mavic Mach 2 sew-up rims from Nashbar ($9.99 folks, but only 28h and 24h). Now, I'm going schizo about hubs. This is not unfamiliar territory. This happens to me everytime I think about new wheels. Why does this happen? Why do I feel like I'm going to end up on the side of the road fiddling with bike parts?***
These feelings... this really comes up only this strongly with hubs. Wtf? My thoughts are like the ball in a championship game of Chinese table tennis. Pro Max! Phils. Miche! Phils. Sheriff Stars! Pro Max. 7600! Sheriff Stars! Pro Max! Phils. IRO! Miche. ARRGHGHGHGHHGHGHGHGGHHGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

I'm kinda feeling the cup and cone Pro Max.

Whatever. Thanks for sharing with me in my pain.

*Edit* Actually, a few of those hubs can be eliminated (like the Phils and IRO), b/c this wheelset is going to be track-only I think. I was just using some to illustrate my ping-pong like thought pattern.

Carry on.

I hope you're not planning on using those on the street.

No. For the velo. But even if I was, Ceya says that he messengered 28h tubies at a weight of 200 lbs. I'm smaller than that. I'm not worried.

I vote sherriff stars. Or Pro Max. Or Dura Ace. There, problem solved.
Glad to be of service.

Ceya has, and still would if he could!

Go for the Promax ELC - i dig my set up. for sure I do!

Good score, noted.

28H loose ball ProMax. Do it.

I wouldn't be concerned with the 28 hole tubular on the street. A wheel built right, regardless of how many holes will hold strong. The tubulars I could probably do without for daily use but for the track...

Do it now J, do it now.

480gms. That's a serious weight penalty for a tubular rim. But, for $9.99 damn...

They should be bomb-proof though. At 28H 3x rear, 2x(or 3x) front I would ride 'em in the street.

Again, hub choice should be dependent on chain-line...which hub gives you better chain-line.

But, putting all that aside, D/A 7600 Hi-Flange are sweet.

If only they didn't cost so much these days.

However, I'm considering the fact that they may actually be worth what they cost now.

Then again, could always go low flange and balance out the weight.

I hear you on the weight. My philosophy on it is this: I don't know how long I'm going to be racing at the track. I do know that the stock wheels that came on my bike can be vastly improved upon. I think the extra PSI and lessening of rolling resistance I'll gain will make up for the gain in weight. If I get to be a really good, competitive racer, I would eventually spring for Zipps (or something akin) when my ability and budget allow. I'm considering this my "starter" track-specific wheelset. I have a LONG way to go in making myself stronger and better.

I've heard nothing but good things about the higher-end Suzues. I think I'm gonna go ProMax for this.

I think ProMax will work without spending too much. What is the weight gain from low to high flange? I would think it's negligible. What size tires are you using? 20? 19?

Just to be different, I'm gonna say Miche.

Get the NJS Promax. I did (laced to Open Pros)
smooth as hell; love the sound when they spin

Rode them in the park (and street) for a month or so
then decided I didn't want to 'abuse' them on the streets of NYC
and
went back to the stock wheelset (crappy low flange hubs, Alex rims)

was surprised to discover that I could go just as fast on the stock wheelset
(and no worries about abusing it)

go figure
