Commuting - Did NYC just decide not to allow bikes on the Subway no more? :(

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Someone said on the news yesterday that they are not allowing bikes on the subway anymore. I've been doing that all summer to get in and out of manhattan a bit easier. This sucks.
Can someone confirm this? :(

I'm gonna guess no for a couple of reasons. First off, T.A. hasn't said anything about it, and i can imagine if the MTA began restricting bicycles on the subway they'd be in quite a tizzy. Secondly i can't find any mention of it on the MTA website, nor on google news.

When I said someone said on the news....actually what I meant was someone at home (my dear mother) told me that someone said on the news about no bikes on the subway.
Perhaps she was mistaken.
But just in case she was correct can you and some others research this a tad more? Maybe the MTA has not updated their website yet. Or maybe the news story was an isolated incident and the no bikes thing was a temporary restriction?

I just want to make sure. :|

Also, if this was true what would be the fallout? The public response and whatnot....

They said "no riding bikes on the subway", which makes sense..

No, you just can't *ride* your bike on the subway. Which will be tough for you since your bike of course did not come with a kickstand ;)

Unless my bike was damaged, I don't know why I would bring it on the subway anyway.

You can't ride bikes or rollerblades on the subway or you get a $100 fine. You also can't drink an open container of coffee.

Am I allowed to breathe?
But seriously, I plan on using my new bike for daily commutes to work early in the morning. But sometimes I'm going to actually have to get on the subway to get myself to the other borough quicker for whatever reason.
Before my new bike what I've been doing is taking my specialized hardtail into the city. If I'm too tired to commute in the morning or if there just isn't any time I would take the subway with it to work. Then on my lunch hour I would ride the bike up the west side for a little workout. If I did commute to work and I'm too tired after work I would take the bike in the subway and stop off somewhere far enough from home for a nice ride but yet close enough so its not so bad.
Bottomline though if they stopped allowing bikes on subways that would be a bad thing.

But duh, I have no problem of not riding a bike in the subway. That would be ridiculously dumb.

I wouldn't want to get on the subway with a bike during rush hour. It's just too aggravating. I'd have to be physically unable to ride to take the subway with my bike. During the off hours it's not so bad though.

The key word here is "ride."

You can still walk your bike. :)

I would feel terrible out of lack of consideration if I took my bike on the subway during rush hour. I felt bad as it was when I took my bike on a downtown 4 that was full of people returning early from a Saturday Yankees game. The train was packed yet some people insisted on traveling between cars peddling their wares.

If this were true, TA would be sending out e-mails to the whole world.

What the MTA has instructed people to do and what I do myself is ride in the last car of the train. Its usually the least crowded and what I do is lean the bike against the rear door. I'm out of the way of everyone and I haven't ran into a problem yet.

I rarely do this, but I wouldn't feel guilty taking my bike (or tons of luggage for that matter) on the subway at rush hour. It would be aggravating, cuz it's such a pain, but no cause for guilt.

Also, technically, you are supposed to wheel your bike back to the very last car. you can be fined for having a bike in other cars, though I've never heard of that happening. when I have done this, I go to the back car, because there's usually lots more room.

StalkerZERO: there is a small blurb in the lower right hand corner of the Post on page 11 that sort of mentions this, it mentions straddling the bike as being a $75 fine. looks like they're just cracking down on rules already on the books, and the fines are going from $25 to $75 now.

Well I know how I would feel on the other end of this so I make sure I'm considerate to everyone. And riding in the last car against the back door does help alot. As long as your not in anyones way they don't usually care.

Seems OK, given various rules.

yea I was considering doing the following before the weather turns bad.
Take train from Montclair to Hoboken, Path into NYC, ride down to CP and take a lap.

I have only been in NYC 2 times....

Fairly sure there is some kind of rule that disallows it at rush hour times--but you'd have to be a colossal jerk to do that in the first place.

And I hate those floor to ceiling circle death cages you can't take a bike through

It is legal to take a bike on the subway 24/7 in NYC.

Path does not allow bikes during rush Hour.

They are allowed all Weekend.
