I've removed my BB to try and quiet some creaking. Cleaned it all out but before I put it back together, I was wondering just how freely or stiffy the spindle is supposed to turn; I've got a Shimano ES-70. It turns smoothly but is fairly... "firm" I guess. If I spin the spindle and let go it won't continue spinning - it stops immediately. This is my first R&R of a BB, so I'm not sure what they're supposed to feel like fresh out of the box. Thanks.

Now, if it still does that once you attach the crank arms, you've got yourself some problems.

Thanks, Nate. What are your thoughts on using Locktite vs anti-sieze? Mostly because I have the former but not the latter. And if so... would I still need teflon tape (which I have). I'm guessing no, but you never know.

Definitely anti-sieze over Loctite. You can smear a whole tube of anti-sieze on those threads and it won't affect anything if torqued correctly to 50 ft-lbs. However, if you coat the whole thing with Loctite, you might get some corrosion protection, but you'll probably have a hell of a time getting the cups out two or three years down the road.

The teflon tape is completely optional, but I've found it to give me one more layer of corrosion protection, completely eliminate any squeek on older frames, and really ease removal.

Neither of these steps, combined with proper torque, has ever given me a problem, won't loosen until you choose to remove them, and are a cinch to install.
