Hi, ok i'm thinking about switching my bash-guard for a 3rd chainring, like a 44 or 42. I don't know which one would be better, but whats a good 3rd ring chain thingy under $100 and which size..its for my bruiser.

You shouldn't need to spend that much on an outer ring. Steel might be a good idea since it's replacing a bash guard.

Either tooth size will be fine, you haven't had either on the bike so you won't notice a difference. With a 44, you'll have a little more top end. Just make sure the chain ring bolt pattern matches that of your crankset. What front derailleur do you have? And what front shifter do you have...is it 3 speed capable?

Haha yes my left shifter has the 3 thingy. I don't know the derailleur but it'll go over lol. So whats a good ?steel? chainring thats a 44???

Well, it's harder, so it won't wear as fast or suffer rocks as poorly as aluminum. You said you were replacing a bash guard, so I figured you were riding gnarly enough stuff to require such protection. A steel ring would stand up better in harsh circumstances.
