Fifty Plus (50+) - Birthday ride ... 61+

This forum was my inspiration for doing a 61 mile ride for my 61st birthday(tomorrow). It was a great ride on an old MTB ... was not sure which would breakdown first ... the old bike or the old man! I was riding back roads and often had to get off the pavement to avoid ag trucks, etc. I was riding along a river thinking it would be flat ... then ran into sand ridges that I had to climb.

I saw a lot of motorcyclist and thought when I was 16, all I had was a bicycle and wanted a motorcycle. At 61, I can afford a motorcycle, but all I want is bike and legs like 16! Guess I am never satisfied.

Never, that's terrific! Welcome to the forum. And I can relate -- our tastes change as we age, but we're never quite satisfied! Sounds like a really, really, fun ride.

It's a great accomplishment, especially on an old MTB!

Don't tell me: 2.5 inch wobbly knobblies on your mtn bike...and still 61 miles. Plus manure, tallow, hay, cattle, etc trucks grinding past driven by local cowboys. There are no membership dues to pay here, but were there, you've more than paid yours. Welcome NeverBeRich. Being old without being, like, you know, Old is what we do best.

I thought I was one of the few here that did longer distances off road, but Then I have been riding offroad for 15 years, and have aquired the equipment to do a ride like this. To be inspired by the forum for a birthday ride and do it all offroad, off the cuff as you have just done, takes some courage, fitness, endurance, B%££ls, and no brain. Welcome to the club. and for those of you that do not ride offroad, Never-be-rich has just done the equivalent of 100 miles on the road.

Good for you! I'll be 61 in January, and I've been planning the same thing. I did 50 miles on my 50th birthday and thought that was a pretty big deal, because I'd been a runner for years and was just starting to ride. A couple of younger friends (mid-50s) have b-days around the same time as mine, and we're going to pick a date in mid-Jan and do it. Probably be in the 20s in Reno then, but it's a short drive over the hill to Sacramento or the Bay Area, and you can pretty much count on 50-60 degree weather. If we can't do it at home, we'll head over there.
