So I sprained my ankle pretty badly. Enough that I can't walk on it without a brace. I was playing in a 100+ man game of capture the flag on campus and hit a curb wrong. I twisted my ankle and heard a loud pop. I went to the doctor and got some crutches and a brace thingy. I would really like to get back to biking asap as it is my primary mode of transport and a constant piece of happiness in my life. I'm running brakeless right now, but am going to have to order a brake to be safe (if anyone has a spare caliper or lever they want to get rid of I'd be willing to pay you for them). It's going to take 6ish weeks to heal fully, I'm wondering if you guys have any experience with a sprain and how long did it take you to be back on your bike? Should I get a freewheel for the time being so I'm not tempted to backpedal? Any tips or experience you may have would be extremely helpful.

Never had a sprain like what you described, but I've had lots of strains and wrecks. Just plan on going slower, and give youself more time to stop. Having the hand brake is a good idea. I wouldn't bother getting a freewheel, if you start doing something bad for your ankle, you will probably notice it unless you are hopped up on pain meds. I've found biking was a lot easier than walking on a hurt ancle.
Hope you feel better soon.

i broke my ankle playing frisbee in the exact same way in august. just got the cast off thursday. Ive been riding, with a cast, for the last 3 weeks. It wasnt too bad...just dont plan on doing any out of the saddle climbing or skids. mild backpressure should be alright but i wouldnt count on being able to stop with only your legs.

Well, I'm back in the (very uncomfortable) saddle. I can still trackstand for the most part, but I definately cannot skip/skid yet. Put a brake on so I don't kill myself and I must say it increased my stopping power quite a bit. I doubt I'll take it off after I'm healthy. Even if I never use it, it's worth it for the peace of mind. If anyone is interested in a cheap lever and caliper I've got a spare of each I'd let go pretty cheaply.
