In time for next summer i am contemplating this for my steel tourer:
1 - would this set-up work?
campagnolo xenon ergo 9 spd
Campagnolo record triple (50/40/30) 10 spd or 9spd (52/42/30) - both available
Shimano 9 spd cassette
2 - exactly what model of rear deralier should i be looking for Campagolo or sram or shimano?
this site http://www.ctc.org.uk/DesktopDefault.aspx?TabID=3946 suggests 'old campagnolo'
what model would this be? or is it possible to stick with the shimano stx rc that i have?
3 - which chain would be okay?
4 - are xenon shifters worth it? seems like they are made of plastic so will they fall to bits after a while?
5 - bike has band on dt shifters and a band on cable guide at the bottom of the down tube above the bb, so i need some downtube boss things, right? from where?
this is gonna be an e-bay special so any input is greatly appreciatted, another mix and match question, but working out all this stuff is like juggling, better to ask those who know rather than guess and be left with components that don't work together, thanks.....
okay to answer my own questions (i have done some searches here ya know):
answer to question 1 = yes, no difference between 9spd and 10spd cranks, well .something of a mm, sydney and that biker7 dude who accused him of smoking carpet battled that one out, i'll go with the syd dude!
answer to question 2 = don't know
answer to question 3 = eeer, don't know
answer to question 4 = uhh, eeer, don't know
need help please before pressing the bid button on e-bay.....

Try to stick with one level ie: Mirage, Veloce etc.

This goes along with what I just said stick with one group from one manufacturer. If you are new to building up bikes this will save you a lot of hassle in the long run.
3 - which chain would be okay?
Campy or SRAM
4 - are xenon shifters worth it? seems like they are made of plastic so will they fall to bits after a while?
I personally would use no lower than Veloce.
5 - bike has band on dt shifters and a band on cable guide at the bottom of the down tube above the bb, so i need some downtube boss things, right? from where?
If you take the actual levers off and there are just the lever bosses on the band then you can affix cable guides to them. If not SOL.

Nothing wrong with that.

This goes along with what I just said stick with one group .....No good reason for that, other than not mixing chorus/record cranks/BB with the lower groups crank/BB

You're correct about that. As far as current Campy goes it's pretty interchangable across the board except the crank BB thing. If you read the original post he was talking about Xenon brifters and Record cranks. You can upgrade to much nice shifters if you skip the Record BB and crank. Sometimes for the less experienced it's easier to buy all one group until you know what you can safely mix without screw ups.

You don't really want to mix Campy shifters with a Shimano cassette because the cog spacings are different. And the Campy and Shimano rear derailleur throw ratios are also different. You may be able to make it work but it's much better to keep the indexed shifters, cassette, and rear derailleur in the same brand. Cross breading the crankset works OK.

thanks for the input guys...
the main reason for the shimano cassette is that i use my bike for touring trips and fully loaded its a beast. i plan on using a cyclotouriste cassette (14/15/17/19/21/24/27/30/34) or something very similar, as for the shifting i plan on using a 'shift mate' - logical solution to the problem it seems.
thinking about the shifters - veloce ego's 9 spd as for the price they seem a better deal than the xenon's, adding in price of cables (veloce price includes cables).
strangley the seller's website states that:
'Veloce, like all the Ergopower systems, has a new Ergopower right-hand indexing control lever and mechanism to ensure top performance of the latest generation drivetrains. This control lever, which has the "9 speed" marking, is not compatible with the drivetrains of previous years'
is this really true? surley veloce will work with any campagnolo crank and rear mech? is this marketting or fact?
which reminds me of a question i asked before....can i still use the shimano stx rc?
my thinking is shimano cassette, shimano stc rc rear mech and campagnolo shifters = shift mate model No.3 to quote:
'Model 3 works when you have one brand of shifter, and your rear derailleur and cassette are another brand. 2001 & newer Campagnolo 9sp shifters & Shimano 9sp derailleur & Cassettes'
derrailleurs aren't really 'speeded' so no problem with the shimano stx rc rear mech? (mech is long cage and came off a 8 speed, which would be good for triple and 9spd, yes?)
so as long as i dont mix crank and bb and add the above into the mix it should work, hmmm..........would it?
on the upside my new long reach dual pivot brakes came today, (time to junk the weinmann centrepulls) just need those levers etc, etc, etc.......great! soon i wont have to be pushed downhill by my camping equipment as i pull the levers to the bars, and just keep going.... lol
^^^...You can do it that way, But I duno why. On a touring rig, Shimano bar end shifters would just make more sense. The stx-rc RD is speced for a 32 tooth cog and will liekly handle the 34....The seller is a little full of BS, and a little bit right. The shifters don't care about cranks or FD,but campy did make a slight change in shifter pull/RD throw ratio, which doesn't matter since you are using a shiftmate on a Shimano RD.In the real world, you can still mix pre and post change shifters/RD, despite what 'campy sez'.

thanks for the reply sydney, never tried bar end shifters. i have my hands on the brake hoods most of the time and just got twitchy with downtubes in certain siutations when fully loaded. more probably to do with not having a front rack and loading up the rear of the bike, making it handle wierd sometimes - these times coincided with reaching for the downtube shifters now and again, whoooooooaaaaa!
also person i was with had gripshifters and seemed less to do in changing, i was a bit jealous after the millionth gear change of the day. So in the pursuit of laziness (and better braking) came the brifter idea! but bar ends, mmm! wonder where i try them.....
It sounds like you already have your mind made up as to what you are going to do. Good luck.

As far as the band style downtube cable stops, you will likely have to look into inline adjusters and use them. I have yet to find a downtube clamp that are the same as the brazed on bosses (if anyone knows of any PLEASE PM me). However if you get a clamp on cable stop that was used for bikes with stem shifters (loosescrews.com probably has them as well as other places) you can stop your housing from the levers there and run them down the downtube. The inline adjusters can give you the derailleur adjustments you need.
If you're using Campy levers, I'd highly suggest staying with Campy derailleurs and cassette. There are adapters made to allow the use of shimano/campy mixes but they are far and few between and probably $30+. sydney, as usual, has the sound and straight forward advice on many of your other questions.
