1. The ultimate best tasting loaded with vitamins and stuff...-Monster-! Low carb is the best, and with only six grams of sugar for the 16oz. Very smooth too with NO high fructose corn sryup, or "sugar";uses sucralose. Helps me alot when im out A TON. ( Fruit juice filled "khoas" is good too, assult has a berry taste)

2. I like this one also. It's called -Lost- It doesn't have any vit. C unlike monster, but taste as well and smooth and carries a big energy boost.

3. Mountian Dew's, also good tasting, -AMP- though only in a 8oz can its energy providing and yummy.

4. Full Throttle by Coke. Pretty good. Sort of fruity. Pretty sure it had high fruct. corn sryup but I still like it.

5. Rumba- Very very fruity with tons of vitamins. I like it alot and taste like all sorts of fruits.

6. Something called "Boo-Koo". At first, yuck, but then good. I didn't feel that much extra energy, but taste good after a while. The regular is sort of sugery, but still uses sucralose i think.

7. Next ones called Kronic. It's ok... boost is good;taste is somewhat bitefull>.<

8. This one uses a lot of guarana called "Bawls". It's pretty good, a big energy boost but taste is also ok.

9. A weird one called "Red Jack". Eh not the best but I'd still buy it if it was the only one. Pretty good with vitamins. And an ok boost.

10. Most ppl like "red bull" but I think it's overrated. I did see some boost, but taste was ok and the ingrdients were iffy.

11. Yep my least favorite and I couldn't wait to finish it. It's called Rockstar and it is the biggest waste of two dollors ever! It has the biggest monstrous bite that also dries your mouth up and feels taste also like rubbing alchohal. YUK!

P.S make sure theres no creatine in them. Sobe has one (I forgot its name) and it has it in. And the drink taste bad too.

There is an energy drink called "Sparx"- it only comes in orange flavor and a rockstar sized can, but it is alcoholic. I guess it is taking the jaeger bomb idea and making it one drink (or I guess whiskey and coke or any kind of stimulating drink mixed with alcohol) It probably isn't the best idea for riding- I have never even tasted one, but a few of my buddies love 'em and drink them whenever they have the chance. Interesting none the less.

Well gatorade has a ton of sugar and is highly acidic, which can rot your teeth much faster than usual;)

HAHA, yep. After taking anatomy & physiology in college my mountain dew addiction ceased and I pretty much stopped drinking sugary or caffeinated beverages. There are exceptions of course, but I am much more aware of what I put in my body. Hell yeah for dihydrogen oxide!

if you're going for energy boost, why the low-carb fake-sugar approach?

gatorade rots teeth.
and what about: mountain dew(caffine?), lost(i have never heard of it but i bet it is pure sugar) like red bull(anything that stains stone isnt going in me), coke(need i say more?), kronic(isnt that another name for marijuana?)

i dont mean to come of harsh i am a little bit of a health nut with stuff like this. i like to see people well educated in what they eat and not be fooled by, . . . false advertising.

i will give redbull credit for doing that thing were they fly off the piers, i saw that and it was rediculasly awsome.

yep you are, sugar is a very broad term which encompasses a lot more than the "sugar" you are thinking about. Until you take some organic chemistry or biochem, here is a simple definition to impress upon your friends: Glucuose-a sugar energy source: a six-carbon monosaccharide produced in plants by photosynthesis and in animals by the metabolism of carbohydrates. The commonest form, dextrose, is used by all living organisms. C6H12O6

As far as the rest of the chemicals, I wouldn't talk about them until you find out what they are.;)

energy drinks just leave me too spracked to do serious riding, sometimes I'm tired when I start but after five minutes of pedaling I'm energized. I used to drink a lot of energy drinks but caffeine pretty much does the same thing as cocaine but to a lesser extent. It stimulates your brain to use up endorphins and when its over its really over because endorphins are created at a constant rate (im pretty sure on this one, but don't quote me) so when you use your stockpile up you aren't left with much. Stick with adrenaline, its healthier, and you body makes it for extreme situations just like mountain biking. So if you are too tired to do a ride start riding a gnarlier line and I guarantee you will wake up. I'll go a day or 2 without sleep sometimes with school work, pre-dawn surfs, work, and mountain biking and I still always have enough energy to do some pretty technical trails.

My drink - Cytomax - watered down a bit.

Similar to Gatorade with a bit of water.

EJ, The problem with those drinks you listed is that they are to sweet. IE, to much sugar, not enough water in each. Way more sugar per serving than Gatorade. WAAAAY More. During longer rides (3 plus hours)your stomach will dislike such sweet drinks.

And there is way to much caffeine in them. Some caffeine is good on long rides, keeps you alert and consumed while exercising, has little diuretic effect. Too much is not.

Is Jolt still around? there used to be a cola named Jolt. ''All the sugar, twice the caffeine"

i'd like to know the answer to this too. a few people have told me that these types of drinks or no good for you but don't really give a reason.

and ej123, rule of thumb: anything that ends with "lose" is a sugar, i.e., lactose, glucose, fructose, etc. (from what i recall, anyhow...)

Similar to overconsuming pepsi or coke or mountain dew, etc. Way to much sugar and caffeine.

A couple a week ain't going to kill you. 4 a day might.

The Low Carb versions of these drinks has sucralose in it, which is artificial sweetener. No one really knows what happens when humans ingest large amounts of it. see aspartame.

you realize you're not supposed to mix that with alcohol...

And I'm still confused why OP suggested low-carb (fake sugar) energy drinks. that makes NO sense to me. sports drinks (gatorade, accelerade, cytomax (i assume, never had it), and the like) all have sugar, for a reason.

i've seen some of the debate about aspartame. lot of stuff floating around about that stuff... both good and bad.

about the alcohol mixing thing, a lot of people like mixing redbull and other energy drinks with alcohol despite the warnings not to. ironic how red rave (now red rain - distributed by colt beverages) has the same warning yet has recipes on their site for mix drinks  .

ok, here i go.

il take take of the obvois ones first. 'coke' 'mountain dew' i dont drink anything that says mountain dew on it, and i stay away from coke becasue as everyone knows it is a notoriosly horrible soda.

energy drinks are PACKED TO THE TOP with sugar, artifical everything you can imagine and honestly i dont think anyone knows exactly what it really is, so i dont drink it. energy drinks are not for us(everyone on this forum, i am almost 100%sure) we dont need that amount of vitamins and sugar and performance enhancers, the only people i think that do need it is ironmen and guys/girls that do stuff like that. i posted this before, i had a redbull and i split it on my stone walk, i go outside the next day and there is a stain there. it is like a drug, for real, it gives a boost. if you add all those boosts up and what you are drinking to get it i bet you would be astonished by what you consume.

gatorade is even a little over the top, but i like the taste of it then rather the nothing taste of water.

further then just drinking this crap, you also need to eat correctly to have the energy to go long. my father is a veagen and i eat mostly all natural food(freerange eggs and chicken, no farm raised fish, not alot of tuna and red meat) so i think i am well educated in this stuff.

if anyone knows the workings of businesses you know they will do anything to sell a product, and even more to make it successfull and keep it that way. the last thing i have to say is dont beleive everything you hear/see/read.

i hope some of you take this to heart and mybe it will help some of you. i dont mean to be rash.

you're almost 100% sure nobody on this forum does Ironman?

I'm almost 100% sure you're wrong. Check the Triathlon forum. Also, I'm not sure I see how ironman competitors need special vitamins any more than your average hardcore cyclist.

If you rely on energy drinks to get out and bike...
a) you're not sleeping enough
b) you're not eating well
c) you're not fit

Energy drinks are not good for you, but they should be fine once a month or less. Regardless, it's always better to NEVER touch these things. I liked monster but I didn't think I enjoyed it enough to pay the 3 dollars for it again. As far as I know, caffeine stunts your growth and if you're active now, you're going to lose your energy at a more rapid pace later. I'm not very educated with this sort of thing, I was just taught that taking in a lot of caffeine isn't good for you.

Most "energy" drinks nowadays are just drinks loaded with caffeine, nothing else, and all that boosts is your mental stamina, not your physical stamina.

rasheed
10-04-05, 03:07 PM
hooli, i think that's the main purpose for energy drinks - especially the caffine and taurine laden ones. taurine is an enzyme that your body produces and helps you focus when you're mind is fatigued. caffine is a stimulant that doesn't necessarily help you mind focused, but gives you an energy boost to fight mental fatigue. i think it's a given that if you haven't gotten enough sleep or don't eat well and aren't in good shape, no amount of energy drinks are going to help you clean that tough tech climb or keep going for an extra few kilometres longer than usual.

zx108, you like to eat natural foods, your dad's a vegan and i work as a clerk in a hospital kitchen's dietary office (really, i do). that doesn't necessitate that we know enough about nutrition and these various products to be able to determine the exact truth about everything related to them...

Precisely why I said that most of the neergy drinks are just caffeine, no taurine or anythign like that! It's just like drinking a pop version of coffee. And although you may be right about the sleep and diet, whenever I eat well and sleep well, I always feel refreshed and raring to go. That energy drink isn't necessarily going to help you for those extra few kilometers. It can help, but boredom or mental fatigue (which i get even with a full can of monster) can't be overcome that easily. Sure the drink may aid you in those extra kilometers, but mountain biking should be fuelled from within, not from your drink. (not saying you believe in these 100% but I know people who are drink these energy drinks, religiously, and always claim that the drink got them the extra 5 kilometers out or that last touchdown)

I don't dislike creatine, but I would be careful about staying hydrated while using it. Since it has a tendency to make you thirsty, dehydration and cramping can sometimes be an issue especially when used in conjunction with an activity like biking.

wvxc
10-06-05, 11:11 AM
Yeah, I understand that, and thats why I only use it as a post workout supplement. Hydration is a major part of any workout including MBR. I got the idea that some guys were against it totally. Thanks for the clarification.

wvxc - I've never used creatine as a post ride supplement. Do you notice any notable advantages (quicker recovery, greater strength, etc.)? I have used it in combination with a protein supplement while lifting. While it seems to shorten the recovery period, I'm not sure if it is a truly physical reaction or more of a mental one.

It helps me recover quicker, but I also use NO Xplode, which allows for longer harder runs, as a preworkout supplement. Both require protien for synthesis so I take whey and an amino burst tablet with essential and branch chain aminos. Great for energy, and muscle recovery. Don't forget the flax seed for your heart while you are at it.
